What is the Suno Duration slider?

The Duration slider is a pre-generation control. It tells Suno how long you want a new V5.5 generation to be. You choose the duration in the Create form, add your song description or lyrics, and then generate.

It is not an editing control for a song that already exists. If you already have a generation and want to add another section, finish an incomplete ending or remove unwanted material, you will still need an editing option such as Extend or Crop.

How to use the Duration slider in Suno V5.5

1. Open Suno on the web. The July 20 announcement specifically identifies the web Create form.
2. Go to Create.
3. Select the V5.5 model. The Duration control was announced for V5.5.
4. Find the Duration slider. Drag it to your intended song length.
5. Add your description or custom lyrics. Make sure the amount of material fits the time you selected.
6. Review your structure. A duration tells Suno how much time you want; section labels help describe how that time should be used.
7. Create and judge the entire song. Do not evaluate only the opening. Listen for completed lyrics, unnecessary repetition and a natural ending.

Does the slider guarantee an exact song length?

The safest way to understand the slider is as an instruction about intended duration. Selecting a time does not eliminate the musical decisions Suno must make while interpreting your prompt and lyrics.

The final generation may be affected by:

• The number and length of your lyric lines
• The requested tempo
• Long introductions or instrumental breaks
• Repeated choruses and refrains
• The genre and its normal pacing
• Outro instructions
• How V5.5 interprets your section labels

A longer setting also does not automatically create meaningful development. If the idea only supports two minutes, asking for five can produce repetition, extra instrumental passages or a song that feels finished long before the audio stops.

The reverse is also true. If you provide several verses, repeated choruses, a bridge and an outro but request a short generation, Suno may rush the delivery, omit material or stop before the song resolves.

Plan what should happen during the time you select

Start with the purpose of the song. A social hook, podcast introduction, standard single, worship song and cinematic piece do not need the same amount of material.

For a short song or promotional clip

Build around one idea. Get to the central phrase quickly, limit the introduction and avoid adding a bridge merely because full songs often have one. A short piece needs focus more than complexity.

For a standard song

A familiar structure can help Suno understand the movement you want:

For a longer song

Add development instead of filler. Change the lyrical perspective, introduce an instrumental movement, use a bridge or breakdown, vary the final chorus, or let a story reach another stage. Repeating the same material for longer does not make the song more complete.

Duration slider or Extend: which should you use?

Use Duration before generating. Use Extend after generating when the song is worth keeping.

Do not keep extending a weak foundation. If the vocal character, tempo, genre or arrangement is wrong, start again with a better prompt, structure and Duration setting. Extend is most useful when it preserves something you already want.

What to do when the generated length is wrong

If the song ends too early

1. Check whether you supplied more lyrics than the chosen duration can comfortably hold.
2. Shorten long lines that require slow or crowded delivery.
3. Remove unnecessary introduction and instrumental-break instructions.
4. Use clear section labels so Suno can see what still needs to happen.
5. Generate again with a longer duration if the whole arrangement needs more space.
6. Use Extend when the existing song is strong and only its final section is missing.

If the song is too long

1. Decide whether the problem is length or repetition.
2. Remove the section that contributes the least.
3. Reduce repeated chorus instructions.
4. Regenerate with a shorter Duration setting when the whole arrangement needs tightening.
5. Use Crop when only the beginning or ending contains unwanted material.
6. Use the Song Editor when one internal section is causing the problem.

If the song repeats or refuses to finish

A longer setting will not necessarily repair an ending problem. Make the desired conclusion clear, reduce competing instructions and decide whether you need to regenerate, extend from an earlier point or replace the ending.

The strongest workflow is simple: define the purpose, outline the sections, choose the intended duration, generate, and then decide whether the foundation deserves editing.

Regenerate when the foundation is wrong. Use Extend, Crop or the Song Editor when the foundation is worth keeping. The new slider helps with planning, but the creator still has to make the decisions.
