Soca is not shorthand for “Caribbean party music.” This lesson teaches the musical relationships, cultural context and decision-making needed to direct a recognizable Soca track—and to tell when a generation has drifted into Calypso, Dancehall, Reggaeton, Afrobeats or generic tropical Pop/EDM.
What you will complete

1. Start with lineage, not surface markers
Soca developed in Trinidad and Tobago during the 1970s from calypso. Lord Shorty, later Ras Shorty I, is central to its early development; his experiments joined calypso with East Indian rhythmic and instrumental influence within Trinidad’s multicultural environment. Groovy Soca

Lead with relationships. Platform tags, sliders and model vocabulary come afterward.
