The 5 Writing Samples That Teach AI More Than “Write Like Me”

AI Writing Assistance · Find Your Voice · Public Lesson 12

This lesson is part of the public AI Writing Assistance series: practical training you can use now, with a deeper Find Your Voice practice available where your access includes it.

A vague instruction like “write like me” gives AI almost nothing reliable to work with. A small, deliberate set of samples gives it evidence.

The Jack Righteous approach

Choose samples that reveal different parts of your communication rather than five versions of the same polished article.

Use this workflow

  1. Choose one piece where you explain something difficult clearly.
  2. Choose one where you sound relaxed and conversational.
  3. Choose one where you make a strong argument or recommendation.
  4. Include one short-form piece and one longer piece.
  5. Add a note explaining what you like about each sample so AI does not have to guess.

Why this matters

AI can move quickly enough that a weak assumption becomes polished before you notice it. A stronger workflow makes the important choices visible earlier: what the source material actually says, what belongs to your voice, what the reader needs, and what still requires human judgment.

A prompt you can actually use

Copy and adapt:

I am giving you five writing samples. For each one, tell me what aspect of my voice it demonstrates and what should not be generalized from that sample alone. Then identify the patterns that appear across multiple samples. Do not imitate the voice until I approve the findings.

What a useful AI response should do

A useful response should help you inspect the material, not hide the reasoning under better prose. You should be able to see which patterns came from your source material, which conclusions are tentative, and which choices still belong to you.

Your five-minute exercise

My clearest explanatory sample is: ______________________________

My most natural conversational sample is: ______________________________

My strongest opinionated sample is: ______________________________

The pattern that appears across all three is: ______________________________

What the human still decides

AI can help with pattern recognition, organization, questions, alternatives and editing. You still decide what is true, what sounds like you, what belongs in the project, what is safe to publish and what deserves to become a reusable rule.
