Remaster remix and new version ISRC decision

Do Remasters, Remixes and New Versions Need a New ISRC?

AI Music Distribution Guide · Reviewed September 22, 2026

Direct answer: Do not decide by the word “remaster” alone. The key question is whether you still have the same recording or a materially different recording/version. A minor technical correction is not the same thing as a remix, new vocal, new arrangement or new recording.

Use a recording-identity test

Ask what actually changed

  • EQ, level, de-essing or noise reduction only?
  • New vocal performance?
  • New instruments?
  • New structure or arrangement?
  • Remix or alternate version?
  • Different duration because the recording itself changed?

Minor correction versus new version

DistroKid’s Audio Swap guidance treats minor fixes and mastering changes differently from remixes, alternate versions, new recordings, restructured tracks and new production elements. That distinction is useful even if you are not using Audio Swap.

If you are only switching distributors

If the recording is truly the same and only the distributor changes, keep the same ISRC. See How to Keep the Same ISRC When Switching Music Distributors.

AI-specific warning

With AI music it is easy to call a regenerated vocal or newly generated arrangement a “remaster.” Document what was regenerated. If the performance, structure or production materially changed, treat the new file as a version decision rather than a simple mastering update.

Frequently asked questions

Does louder mastering automatically require a new ISRC?

Not necessarily. A technical mastering correction is different from a materially different recording.

Does a remix need separate treatment?

Yes. DistroKid’s Audio Swap guidance excludes remixes and alternate versions from simple audio replacement.

What about a new AI vocal generation?

That can be a materially different performance. Document it before deciding whether the original recording identity still applies.
