DistroKid AI Music Release Checklist Before Upload
A finished song is not automatically a release-ready song. Before you click upload, use this Ready / Stop / Verify gate to check the audio, rights, AI contribution, metadata, artist mapping, artwork, covers, collaborators, timing and promotion risk.
Fast answer: should you upload today?
READY
Your final audio is locked, rights are clear, AI use is documented, metadata is final, artist pages are mapped correctly, collaborators are settled, the release date is realistic, and you are not relying on risky promotion.
STOP
You cannot explain who owns part of the song, you used an uncleared sample or voice, you do not know whether the track is a cover/remix/interpolation, or your release depends on impersonation or fake streaming.
VERIFY
You probably have a releasable track, but one issue still needs a specialist check: AI Credits, cover licensing, metadata, Apple/Deezer handling, artist mapping, or release timing.
DistroKid currently accepts music made with AI tools, but it requires rights ownership and compliance with streaming-service rules. DistroKid specifically warns against impersonation, infringement and mass-generated spam. That makes release readiness a rights-and-identity problem before it becomes an upload-form problem.
The 10-point final pre-upload gate
1. Lock the final audio. Confirm this is the actual master you want distributed. Check the opening, ending, artifacts, clipped sections, vocal problems, unwanted generations, obvious edit seams and exported file.
2. Confirm commercial-use rights. Save the relevant AI-tool terms, plan level, license evidence, sample/loop permissions and contributor agreements. If you cannot show why you are allowed to distribute the recording, stop here.
3. Record what AI actually generated. DistroKid's current AI Credits distinguish AI-generated lyrics, music/composition, all audio and part of the audio. Ordinary AI-assisted mixing, mastering or workflow help is not treated the same way.
4. Finalize metadata. Lock title spelling, primary artist, featured artists, songwriter names, explicit status, language, genre and version information. Do not use metadata to imply a celebrity feature or identity that does not exist.
5. Map the correct artist pages. If you already have Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube Music artist pages, make sure DistroKid is pointed at the correct profiles. Wrong mapping can create a release problem even when the audio is fine.
6. Check the artwork. Make sure it is square, platform-safe, rights-clear and not misleading. Preserve the source file and note whether a material portion was AI-generated where relevant to your release workflow.
7. Classify borrowed material correctly. Original, cover, remix, sample, interpolation and public-domain arrangement are not interchangeable. If you cannot classify the track confidently, do not select a cover license just to get through the form.
8. Set collaborators and money. Confirm public credits, DistroKid Splits where appropriate, recoupment terms, fees paid upfront and who owns which contribution. A Split is a payment mechanism, not a substitute for an agreement.
9. Give the release enough runway. DistroKid recommends uploading about four weeks in advance when it matters that a release appears across services on the same date. Cover licensing can add additional processing time.
10. Reject fake promotion before release day. DistroKid warns against buying streams, followers or playlist placement. Build real listener paths instead of gambling a clean release on artificial activity.
AI Credits: what needs disclosure and what does not?
DistroKid's current AI Credits workflow is more specific than the old blanket question “Was AI used?” When part of the creative work was generated by AI, the upload process can identify the relevant contribution.

Rights gate: original, cover, remix, sample or interpolation?
This is the most important stop point on the page. DistroKid's cover-license service is for a qualifying cover: you perform and record the song yourself, the original song was previously released in the United States, and the core lyrics, melody, title and fundamental character are not materially rewritten. A cover license does not turn a remix, sample-based track, mashup or derivative rewrite into a standard cover.

Metadata and artist mapping gate
Before upload, confirm the final title, artist name, songwriter names, featured artists, explicit-content flag, language, release date and whether the track belongs on an existing artist page or needs a new one.
Do not create a new artist page by accident. DistroKid's upload form lets you identify existing Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music and other artist profiles. If you already have a profile, use the correct mapping rather than relying on the store to guess.

Store-specific rules come after DistroKid acceptance
DistroKid is the delivery layer, not the final policy authority for every streaming service. A release can clear DistroKid and still face store-specific review, metadata requirements or enforcement.
- Apple Music: if an AI-assisted release is rejected, get the exact store-level reason instead of assuming Apple has a blanket AI-music ban.
- Deezer: current AI detection, recommendation restrictions and catalogue-cleanup policies are different from Apple's handling.

Release timing: do not upload at the last minute
DistroKid says releases can take several days to be reviewed, approved and delivered, after which each streaming service has its own ingestion time. If a synchronized release date matters, DistroKid recommends uploading about four weeks ahead. Future custom release dates are available on eligible DistroKid plans.
If the track is a cover, add more caution: DistroKid says securing the cover-song license can take up to 14 business days before the release is submitted.
Release-date rule: if your campaign depends on a specific date, do not build the schedule around DistroKid's fastest possible delivery. Build it around enough runway for review, store ingestion, profile setup and pitching.
Promotion gate: protect the release after upload
A legitimate song can still get into trouble through fraudulent promotion. DistroKid explicitly warns creators not to pay services that promise more streams, more followers or playlist placement. Artificial streaming can lead to unpaid royalties, removals, warnings or account consequences.
- Use legitimate ads, content, email, community and artist-profile promotion.
- Keep invoices and screenshots for paid campaigns.
- Avoid any service selling guaranteed numbers instead of transparent marketing work.
- Measure saves, follows, repeat listening and real audience response—not purchased stream counts.
