Choose Your Independent Publishing Project

You do not need a complete publishing business before you begin. You need one clear project that you can realistically finish, publish and learn from.

In this academy, a publishing project is not limited to a paperback or eBook. It can be a podcast season, a short guide, a workbook, a music release, a training resource, a newsletter series, a video series, a digital product or a focused marketing campaign. What makes it a publishing project is that you plan it, create it, package it, release it and make it available to an audience.

Your Milestone 1 outcome: choose one primary project and describe it in one sentence.

Why this is the first milestone

Many independent creators do not fail because they lack ideas. They stall because they are trying to develop too many ideas at once. A book becomes a podcast, the podcast becomes a course, the course needs a website, the website needs a membership, and the original work never gets finished.

Milestone 1 is about making a temporary commitment: this is the project I will take through the full 20-milestone cycle first. Other ideas are not discarded. They are placed in a future-project list so they do not compete with the work in front of you.

What can count as your project?

Written publishing

A short book, eBook, workbook, journal, devotional, guide, article series, newsletter sequence or downloadable PDF.

Audio and music publishing

A podcast pilot, a limited podcast season, an audiobook sample, a spoken-word project, a single, EP, album, instrumental collection or private audio lesson series.

Education and creator products

A beginner course, workshop, prompt pack, template set, checklist, training path, paid resource library or guided challenge.

Video and visual publishing

A YouTube series, short-form campaign, video essay, mini-documentary, educational video set, illustrated story or creator trailer.

Marketing and audience projects

A product launch, newsletter-growth campaign, lead-generation campaign, membership launch, book-release campaign, music-release campaign or community-engagement series.

A project is not the same as your whole vision

Your long-term vision may include several formats. That is useful, but it is not your first project. The first project must have a visible finish line.

Too broad Milestone-ready
Build my personal brand Publish a five-article series that introduces my core message
Start a podcast Produce and release a six-episode first season
Become an author Complete and publish a practical 15,000-word beginner guide
Sell my music Package and release one single with a simple promotional campaign
Create an academy Publish one four-lesson starter training path

The five tests of a realistic first project

1. It serves one recognizable audience

You do not need a perfect customer profile yet. You should know who is most likely to read, watch, hear, use or respond to the project.

2. It creates one main result

The project may have several benefits, but one should lead. Does it teach, entertain, document, persuade, generate interest, support a release or help someone complete a task?

3. It has a finish line

You should be able to state what “complete” means: five chapters, six episodes, one campaign, four lessons, ten videos or one release package.

4. It fits your current capacity

A useful project can stretch you, but it should not depend on a large team, an unrealistic budget or skills you cannot reasonably access.

5. It can be published and tested

The project must reach an audience in some form. A private idea folder is not yet a publishing project.

How this connects to your larger creator journey

Your first project can eventually become part of a larger system. A book can support a podcast. A podcast can create articles. A music release can lead to a campaign, visual package or paid training resource. The academy will help you make those decisions later. For now, choose the strongest first container for the idea.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Choosing the project that sounds most impressive instead of the one most likely to be completed.
  • Combining several audiences into one first release.
  • Treating every possible format as a required launch asset.
  • Starting production before deciding what completion means.
  • Allowing AI to generate the project direction without adding personal purpose, experience or judgment.
  • Choosing a project only because a platform or trend appears popular.

Your Milestone 1 statement

Use this sentence:

I am creating a [specific project] for [specific audience] to help them [primary result].

Examples:

  • I am creating a six-episode podcast season for first-time AI music creators to help them understand how to move from generating songs to developing a repeatable creative process.
  • I am creating a short workbook for independent faith-based creators to help them turn one message into a structured content series.
  • I am creating a single-release campaign for new listeners to introduce my artist identity and direct them to my main music hub.
  • I am creating a beginner guide for aspiring self-publishers to help them prepare a realistic first book for release.

Milestone completion test

You are ready to continue when:

  • You have selected one primary project.
  • You can describe its format and intended audience.
  • You can state the main result it should create.
  • You know what finished will look like.
  • You have moved competing ideas into a separate future-project list.
