Why Does ElevenLabs Change Pronunciation in the Same Script?

ElevenLabs Creator Help · Reviewed September 22, 2026
Direct answer: If the same word is pronounced differently inside one project, lock the pronunciation before you keep generating. Use a pronunciation dictionary where supported, keep the spelling/context consistent, and avoid changing models mid-project.
Consistency starts with one pronunciation decision
Choose the pronunciation you want before generating the full asset. If the name or term is important, test it in a short sentence first.
Use a pronunciation dictionary when the model supports it
ElevenLabs pronunciation dictionaries can correct names, places and technical terms. Its current documentation supports IPA/CMU phoneme tags on specific models and alias substitutions more broadly.
Keep the written form consistent
If a brand name appears as a full word in one paragraph and an abbreviation in another, the model has more room to interpret it differently. Standardize the input text.
Do not switch models halfway through a finished narration
Different models handle normalization and pronunciation differently. A project built on one model can drift if later corrections are generated on another.
For long scripts, repair in controlled chunks
ElevenLabs recommends splitting long text into segments. Keep enough surrounding context that the corrected word still sits inside the same meaning and tone.
