Why Does My ElevenLabs Audio Sound Noisy, Metallic or Artificial?

ElevenLabs Creator Help · Reviewed September 22, 2026
Direct answer: Artifacts can come from poor source recordings, overly aggressive similarity to a noisy clone, excessive break tags, or a model/voice combination that does not fit the job. Diagnose the source before regenerating blindly.
If it is a cloned voice, inspect the source first
ElevenLabs recommends clean, single-speaker audio without background noise, reverb or inconsistent recording conditions. Poor source quality lowers the ceiling of the clone.
High similarity can reproduce unwanted source traits
ElevenLabs warns that high similarity can reproduce artifacts or background noise present in the original sample.
Too many break tags can add artifacts
On supported models, excessive SSML breaks can introduce noise or instability. Remove unnecessary timing markup before blaming the voice.
Compare the same line across models
Use one short test line with the same voice and script. If the artifact changes with the model, you have narrowed the problem.
Do not fix bad synthesis with mastering first
EQ and cleanup can help a finished file, but they should not be used to hide a fundamentally weak generation. Repair the generation at source when possible.
