Song structure is not about using every section in a template. It is deciding what happens next, why it belongs, and what changes when something returns.

Common sections—and possible jobs

Intro

Set the frame quickly enough for this project.

Verse

Develop story, information or musical material.

Pre-chorus

Create a useful handoff into the chorus. It is optional.

Chorus / refrain

Return to the central statement, hook or anchor.

Bridge

Create contrast or a new perspective before returning.

Outro

Close, transform, repeat or intentionally leave the idea open.

None of these sections is mandatory. Keep a section because it does a job—not because a template says it should exist.

Find one structural question

Listen from the beginning and identify one place where the journey feels weak. Examples:

  • The chorus arrives too late.
  • Verse 2 does the same job as Verse 1.
  • The bridge interrupts the song but adds nothing.
  • The final chorus feels like another copy instead of a payoff.
  • The ending simply stops.

  • You can explain what changes between important sections.

  • You can defend whether the new structure is better, worse or simply different.
