The Truth About AI and Pond5: Policy Update Every Creator Must Know

Important Update – July 2025: Pond5, now owned by Shutterstock, has confirmed that it does not allow AI-generated content on its platform under current policy. Submitting AI music, sound effects, images, or video can lead to account termination.

What This Means for AI Creators

If you create content using tools like Suno, BandLab, or any generative system—whether audio, visual, or motion—you cannot legally upload that content to Pond5 for commercial licensing.

This includes but is not limited to:

  • AI-generated music (even with human editing)
  • AI-generated sound effects or ambiences
  • AI-generated images, illustrations, or video

Why This Matters

Many AI creators (myself included) previously viewed Pond5 as a potential platform for licensing original music or sound design created using AI. That’s no longer an option under the current guidelines.

Here’s the direct guidance I received from the Pond5 team:

"Currently Pond5 does not allow AI-generated content on our platform. Accounts found violating this policy will be terminated."

This policy is not speculative—it’s enforced. Any attempt to upload AI-generated content (even if transformed or partially edited) may result in the permanent suspension of your account.

What's Still Possible

If you produce fully human-made content—recorded, mixed, or designed manually without AI—you may still use Pond5. But as of July 2025, AI-assisted workflows are explicitly disallowed, regardless of disclosure or intent.

Recommendations for Creators

  • Do not submit AI-generated content to Pond5.
  • Do not test the policy boundaries. Pond5 and Shutterstock reserve the right to ban contributors without recourse.
  • Use alternative platforms that embrace AI innovation with clear rights terms (I’ll share a guide soon).
  • Document your process carefully if you blend human and AI elements for use on other marketplaces.

Final Thoughts

I’m sharing this to protect my fellow creators. The AI space is evolving quickly, and what works on one platform can get you banned on another.

Honor the rules. Read the fine print. And build your business on platforms that align with your tools and values.

Machine Learning: The Engine Behind Modern AI

Machine Learning (ML) is at the heart of today’s AI revolution. From personalized recommendations on Netflix to voice assistants like Alexa, ML is what makes machines learn from data and improve without being explicitly programmed.

At its core, machine learning is about feeding data to algorithms that can recognize patterns, make decisions, and get smarter over time. It powers applications in healthcare, finance, marketing, cybersecurity, and even self-driving cars.

As more data becomes available, machine learning systems will only get more accurate, faster, and more embedded into our everyday lives. It’s not just the future of tech—it’s the present.
