Spotify Isn't Just for Your Songs: Should a Music Creator Start a Video Podcast?
If you already make music, tutorials, interviews, behind-the-song stories or creator commentary, Spotify's expanding Partner Program creates a second question beyond streaming your tracks: could the content around your music become its own audience and revenue asset?
What changed
Spotify announced its largest Partner Program expansion on September 17, 2026. The program is currently available in markets including Canada and the United States, and Spotify says more than 35 additional markets will become eligible on October 20, 2026.
Eligible shows can earn through Spotify-served advertising and, for qualifying video episodes watched by Premium members in eligible markets, Premium video revenue. Spotify also provides tools for creator-managed sponsorships.

The part music creators should notice
Your song can be the finished product while the work around it becomes long-form content. A release already produces decisions, mistakes, stories and expertise that can support episodes without forcing you to invent an unrelated show.
Behind the song
Explain the lyric, arrangement, AI-assisted workflow, production decisions, visual concept or release strategy behind one track.
Creator conversations
Turn interviews, Creator Spotlights and collaborations into episodes with a useful theme instead of disposable promotion.
Teach what you just learned
A repeatable tutorial or creator problem can become an episode when the explanation benefits from voice, screen, demonstration or discussion.
Document the build
Show how a project changes from idea to finished release. The value is the decision-making, not pretending every step went perfectly.
What you actually need before monetization
For shows hosted on Spotify for Creators, Spotify's current application thresholds require all of the following: a legal address in an eligible market, at least 3 published episodes, at least 2,000 consumption hours on Spotify in the previous 30 days, and at least 1,000 audience members on Spotify in the previous 30 days. Spotify reviews eligible applications against its monetization policies.
A stream for Partner Program purposes is counted after a listener or viewer streams an episode or video for at least 60 seconds. Eligibility and program terms can change, so verify the Monetize page in Spotify for Creators before building a business plan around these thresholds.
How the money works
Advertising
Spotify says participating creators receive a 50% share of recognized revenue when a Spotify-monetized ad plays in an eligible episode. The creator chooses ad-break positions.
Premium video revenue
Qualifying video consumption by Premium members can generate revenue based on Spotify's proprietary formula. It is not a fixed per-view rate.
Your own sponsorships
The Partner Program also supports creator-managed sponsorships. This is distinct from Spotify-served advertising and can matter more as your audience and brand relationships develop.
Subscriptions
Spotify also has podcast subscription options with separate eligibility rules. Do not combine every monetization mechanism into one number when judging whether a show works.
Should you start one?
Consider testing the format when you can identify at least three episode ideas from work you are already doing and each episode gives the audience something beyond simply hearing the finished song.
Do not add it yet when it would pull time away from finishing the music, establishing your creator identity or building a release system you still do not have. Monetization thresholds are a destination, not a reason to create weak episodes.
A simple three-episode pilot for a music creator
Episode 1: the story and decisions behind your strongest recent song. Episode 2: one creator problem you solved while making or releasing it. Episode 3: a conversation with someone whose work connects naturally to yours. Review audience response before committing to a weekly schedule.
Where this fits in the Jack Righteous system
This is not another music-distribution step. It sits between Find Your Voice, audience development and Operate It: take knowledge and stories already created by the work, package them into useful long-form content, then decide whether that content deserves its own business lane.

Bottom line
Spotify's Partner Program expansion makes video podcasting available to many more creators, but the useful opportunity for an independent music creator is not “start a podcast to make money.” It is turn the useful stories, teaching and conversations already surrounding your music into a second creator asset—then earn only after the audience proves it deserves to exist.
