ChatGPT App Connected but Not Working? Why Plugins and Connected Apps Become Unavailable — and How to Fix It

If ChatGPT says an app is Connected but then tells you the app is unavailable, disabled or cannot complete the job, do not assume the connection itself is broken.

The practical answer:

A connected account and an app being usable in the current ChatGPT chat are related, but they are not the same thing. First verify the account still shows connected, open a fresh supported text chat, deliberately select or invoke the app, and test one harmless READ you can verify. Only after that should you begin a long workflow or test a WRITE.

OpenAI's current troubleshooting guidance explicitly says an app can appear Connected without being available in the current chat, model or ChatGPT surface. It also recommends starting a new chat and trying a specific supported task before repeatedly reconnecting the account.

What happened with Shopify in my own workflow

I use ChatGPT with Shopify while operating JackRighteous.com. I have repeatedly observed a frustrating pattern: Shopify appears connected, ChatGPT can recognize the integration, a workflow begins, and then a real Shopify operation fails. ChatGPT may then report that Shopify is unavailable or disabled even though the underlying connection still appears active.

Connected → recognized → workflow starts → operation fails → app becomes unavailable in that conversation → Settings can still show Connected → a fresh conversation can work again

That last step matters. In my testing, I have been able to open a new conversation and successfully retrieve real Shopify data without reconnecting Shopify.

What I can verify—and what I cannot:

I can verify the observable sequence above. I cannot see OpenAI's or Shopify's internal systems, so I cannot responsibly tell you that a conversation was “corrupted,” that a backend process crashed, that authorization definitely failed, or that OpenAI has confirmed a Shopify-specific bug. Those would be diagnoses without evidence.

Connection, availability and permission are five different checks

The word connected is too broad for serious troubleshooting. Separate the problem into these layers:

1. App or plugin availability

Is the app or plugin available for your plan, region, workspace, role, selected model and ChatGPT surface?

2. External account connection

Did you connect the correct provider account or Shopify store, and does ChatGPT still show that account as connected?

3. Provider authorization

What data and scopes did you authorize? Shopify says access is limited by the access you granted and by the user's own Shopify permissions.

4. Current-chat tool availability

Can this specific conversation, model and surface actually invoke the app right now? OpenAI documents this as a separate availability question.

5. READ versus WRITE capability

An app can sometimes retrieve information without being able to create, edit, send or delete it. A successful read is evidence that retrieval works; it is not proof that every write action is authorized, supported or currently available.

The 60-second connected-app health check

Before you spend twenty minutes researching and planning a change that depends on an external system, do this first:

  1. Check Settings. Confirm the app/provider still shows the intended connected account.
  2. Open a fresh text chat. Use a surface that supports the app.
  3. Explicitly select or invoke the app. Do not assume ChatGPT will automatically use it.
  4. Ask for one harmless known READ. Choose something you already know exists.
  5. Verify the returned data. Make sure it came from the real external source.
  6. Only then begin the main job.
  7. Test WRITE separately if the job requires changes. Read access and write access are different checks.
Shopify health-check example: Use Shopify to find the article titled “[KNOWN ARTICLE TITLE].” Do not change anything. Return the title, handle and publication state.

Settings saying Connected is useful information. A successful live read is stronger evidence that the integration can actually execute in the conversation you are about to use.

Why can starting a new ChatGPT chat help?

OpenAI's current troubleshooting documentation says an app can appear Connected without being available in the current chat, model or ChatGPT surface. Its recommended steps include confirming the intended workspace and provider account, reviewing model/surface requirements, and then starting a new chat and asking for a specific supported task.

That tells us something operationally useful: the state of the external account connection and the availability of the app inside one conversation are not identical.

It does not tell us the internal reason one conversation failed. Do not invent one.

When not to disconnect and reconnect

If the provider account still shows Connected, repeatedly disconnecting and reauthorizing should not be your first troubleshooting move. OpenAI specifically advises against continually reconnecting when the app remains unavailable after the relevant checks.

Reconnect or reauthorize when there is actual evidence that authorization is the issue, such as:

  • authorization expired or the provider asks you to sign in again;
  • the wrong account or Shopify store is connected;
  • permissions were explicitly revoked;
  • new required permissions need approval;
  • the provider or ChatGPT explicitly asks for reauthorization; or
  • you intentionally need to switch to a different account or store.

Shopify connected to ChatGPT but not working: the specific checklist

Shopify's current documentation confirms that its ChatGPT connection can access only the store data authorized during setup and only within the user's Shopify permissions. Shopify also says its ChatGPT app supports one store at a time.

  1. Confirm the correct Shopify store is connected.
  2. Confirm you are using the intended ChatGPT account and workspace.
  3. Use a supported text chat if the app is unavailable in the current surface.
  4. Explicitly invoke Shopify.
  5. Test one known article, product or other harmless resource with a READ.
  6. If the READ succeeds, distinguish that from WRITE permission.
  7. Before editing, retrieve the exact live object you intend to change.
  8. Make the smallest approved change.
  9. Reread the object from Shopify after the write.
  10. Verify the public result where a storefront URL exists.

If Shopify is connected but a specific conversation cannot execute the app, do not automatically label that an account-authorization failure. Test the new-chat path first.

The workflow mistake that wastes the most time

The fragile workflow

Research → plan → draft extensive edits → finally test Shopify.

If the first real Shopify operation then fails, all the preparation is stranded behind an unverified dependency.

The stronger workflow

Connection health check → source-of-truth READ → research → plan → WRITE → reread → public QA.

This moves the dependency test to the beginning and verification to the end.

The JR operating model: CONNECT → READ → WORK → WRITE → VERIFY

CONNECT

Confirm the right app, account, workspace and external system.

READ

Retrieve one known object from the live source and verify that it is real.

WORK

Do the research, analysis, drafting and planning only after the dependency is proven.

WRITE

Make the approved change using the correct capability and required permissions.

VERIFY

Reread the changed object and confirm the public result. A claimed write is not the same thing as a verified write.

Why this matters more for business users

For casual use, a failed connected app is annoying. For a business workflow, losing Shopify, Gmail, Calendar, Drive or another operational system in the middle of a task becomes a reliability problem.

The goal is not to pretend connections never fail. The goal is to design the workflow so a failure is detected early, important writes are controlled, and completion is independently verified.

What ChatGPT should never claim after a failed tool call

  • Do not assume the app is disconnected because one tool call failed.
  • Do not assume the user lacks permission without evidence.
  • Do not claim a write happened unless the external system confirms it.
  • Do not say content was changed when the mutation or action failed.
  • Do not confuse “unavailable in this chat” with “your account is disconnected.”
  • Do not represent an unverified business action as completed.
Trust rule:

For business operations, proof comes from the source system. If the final state has not been reread or otherwise verified, the safe status is unverified, not done.

When should you check OpenAI status?

Use the scope of the failure as a clue:

  • One conversation fails: test the same app in a fresh supported chat.
  • One app fails across chats: check that app's account, permissions, requirements and provider status.
  • Several apps fail: check OpenAI service status and your workspace/account settings.
  • ChatGPT itself is broadly degraded: check the official OpenAI Status page before changing multiple connections.

A past platform incident can explain that centralized app failures are possible; it does not prove that your current problem is the same incident. Check the current status rather than diagnosing from history.

When to contact OpenAI or Shopify

If the problem continues after a clean new-chat health check and the relevant account/permission checks, capture useful evidence before contacting support:

  • date, time and time zone;
  • connected app or plugin name;
  • ChatGPT account/workspace;
  • selected model and surface;
  • whether Settings showed Connected;
  • the exact error or availability message;
  • whether a fresh conversation fixed it;
  • whether reauthorization was actually required;
  • whether READ worked but WRITE failed;
  • a screenshot with sensitive information removed; and
  • whether other connected apps worked.

For a ChatGPT-side app problem, use OpenAI Support. For a Shopify-admin, product, payment or store-side issue, Shopify directs users to Shopify Support; issues with a third-party AI platform should be reported to that provider.

FAQ: ChatGPT connected apps not working

Why does ChatGPT say my app is connected but unavailable?

Because account connection is only one layer. OpenAI says an app can appear Connected without being available in the current chat, model or surface. Check those requirements and test a fresh supported chat.

Why does Shopify work in one ChatGPT conversation but not another?

That pattern can occur operationally, and OpenAI's troubleshooting guidance recognizes conversation/model/surface availability as separate from connection state. What it does not establish is the internal technical cause of the difference.

Should I disconnect and reconnect Shopify?

Not first if it still shows Connected. Test the correct account, supported chat and a harmless READ. Reauthorize when there is evidence that authorization, account selection or permissions are actually the problem.

Does starting a new ChatGPT chat reset my Shopify connection?

No. Starting a new chat is a conversation-level troubleshooting step. It does not itself disconnect or replace the underlying Shopify account connection.

Can ChatGPT edit Shopify?

Shopify documents that connected AI tools can perform supported edits when the required access is granted and the user has permission. The exact actions available depend on the integration and authorization.

How do I know whether ChatGPT actually changed my Shopify store?

Reread the changed object from Shopify after the write, confirm the intended field changed, and verify the storefront result when there is a public URL. Do not treat the assistant's statement alone as proof.

Why can ChatGPT read Shopify but not update it?

Read and write are different capabilities. The app may lack the supported write action, required authorization scope, user permission, workspace approval or action approval even when reading works.

Are ChatGPT plugins and connected apps the same thing?

No. OpenAI's current terminology says an app connects ChatGPT to an external service, while a plugin packages workflow capabilities and can include apps, skills or both. People may still search using older “plugin not working” language, but the authorization and availability layers remain important.

What should I test before starting a long Shopify workflow?

Use CONNECT → READ → WORK → WRITE → VERIFY. At minimum, test one harmless known read in the actual conversation you intend to use before investing in the larger job.

The operating lesson

Do not design serious AI workflows around the assumption that every connected tool will be available perfectly in every conversation.

Design around connection health check → source verification → controlled execution → verification.

The distinction that matters:

Fixing a broken connection is troubleshooting. Building a business workflow that remains reliable when a connection fails is operations.
