Pompey Captures Jerusalem in 63 BCE: How Rome Took Control of Judea
Hasmonean civil war gives Rome an opening. Pompey captures Jerusalem in 63 BCE and enters the Temple, beginning the political order that leads toward Herod and Jesus.
Rome does not arrive in a vacuum
By the first century BCE the Hasmonean dynasty is divided by conflict between Hyrcanus II and Aristobulus II. Roman power is expanding through the eastern Mediterranean, and Pompey becomes the decisive external arbiter.
Jerusalem falls to Roman force
In 63 BCE Pompey besieges and captures Jerusalem. Ancient accounts report that he entered the Temple’s inner sanctuary, a profound violation from the perspective of Jewish sacred space, though he did not plunder the Temple as later conquerors would.
Hasmonean independence is effectively over
Judea remains politically complex and does not instantly become identical to the later Roman province administered by prefects. But sovereignty has changed. Roman approval, taxation and regional strategy now dominate Judean politics.
The Herodian road opens
Within a generation, Antipater and his son Herod rise through alliances with Rome. Herod will eventually rule as Rome’s client king, expand the Jerusalem Temple and create the political architecture surrounding the Gospel birth narratives.
