Suno Exclude Styles & Negative Prompts

Use Suno’s Exclude field in Custom Mode to describe the styles, instruments, voices or production traits you do not want. Keep the list short, then tell Suno what should replace the removed element.

Fast answer: Open Custom Mode → Advanced Options → Exclude. Enter plain descriptions such as choir, backing vocals or distorted guitar, guitar solo. Do not rely on minus signs, and do not treat Exclude as a guaranteed audio filter.

What Exclude actually does

Exclude is Suno’s official negative-direction field. It gives the model information about elements you do not want in a new generation. Suno’s help documentation specifically says the field can accept instruments and other unwanted song information.

It is guidance, not a surgical mute button. A generation can still contain a related sound, especially when your positive Style prompt strongly implies it. If the unwanted sound is already baked into an existing recording, use editing or stems instead.

Use Exclude when

  • creating a new version
  • removing a genre tendency
  • discouraging a voice or instrument
  • reducing mix or arrangement traits

Do not use it as

  • a guarantee of silence
  • a way to erase rendered audio
  • a replacement for Instrumental mode
  • a giant blacklist of every possible problem

How to use Exclude in Suno

  1. Start a new song and switch on Custom Mode.
  2. Write your lyrics or choose Instrumental, then complete the positive Styles field.
  3. Open Advanced Options. The menu begins with Exclude.
  4. Enter the few unwanted elements that matter most.
  5. Check that your positive prompt supplies a replacement role.
  6. Create at least two versions, compare them and refine only the failed instruction.
Styles: intimate acoustic soul, warm female lead, fingerpicked nylon guitar, soft upright bass, dry close vocal
Exclude: choir, backing vocals, electric guitar, large reverb

What to write in the Exclude field

Use short, recognizable descriptions. Separate related exclusions with commas. Start with one to three targets rather than a long sentence.

Goal Better Exclude text Avoid
No backing voices choir, backing vocals, vocal harmonies -vocals when you still want a lead
No guitar solo lead guitar, guitar solo excluding all guitar if rhythm guitar is wanted
Cleaner production distortion, clipping, harsh saturation vague terms such as bad mix
Reduce electronic drift EDM, synthwave, electronic drums a long list of unrelated genres
Dryer vocal large reverb, long delay, washed-out vocal effects, which is too broad

Instrumental without vocal textures

lead vocals, spoken word, choir, chants, vocal samples

No unwanted piano

piano, electric piano, keyboard solo

No guitar spotlight

lead guitar, guitar solo, shredding

Less clutter

dense arrangement, busy fills, layered percussion, wall of sound

Softer master

clipping, harsh limiting, brittle highs, heavy distortion

Keep acoustic

EDM, synthwave, electronic drums, synthesizer arpeggios

Fewer ad-libs

vocal ad-libs, spoken interjections, call and response

The replacement-prompt method

Removing an element can leave Suno with an empty musical role. Pair the exclusion with a positive replacement in Styles.

Weak:
Exclude: guitar

Stronger:
Styles: piano-led soul ballad, intimate lead vocal, upright bass, brushed drums
Exclude: electric guitar, acoustic guitar, guitar solo

The second version tells Suno what should carry harmony and texture. This approach is especially useful for solos, vocal layers and genre drift.

Why Suno ignores an Exclude prompt

Problem Likely cause Next move
The element still appears The positive style strongly implies it Remove the conflicting positive term and add a replacement
The arrangement sounds empty You removed a major role Name the instrument or texture that should take over
Lead vocal also disappears The exclusion is too broad Use choir, backing vocals instead of vocals
Results vary between generations Exclude is model guidance, not a hard rule Generate alternatives and refine one variable at a time
You need to remove existing audio Prompting cannot erase rendered sound Use Song Editor, Split from Mix or stems
The prompt is long and unstable Too many negatives compete Keep only the two or three highest-priority exclusions

Frequently asked questions

Is “negative prompting” an official Suno feature?

The official control is named Exclude. “Negative prompt” is the common description for instructions about what not to generate.

Where is Exclude?

In Custom Mode, open Advanced Options. Suno’s current help page says that menu starts with Exclude.

Should I use minus signs?

No special minus-sign syntax is documented. Enter plain descriptions of the unwanted elements.

Does “no vocals” guarantee an instrumental?

No. Use Instrumental mode for instrumental intent, then exclude vocal textures such as choir or vocal samples if needed.

Can Exclude remove a sound from an existing song?

No. It guides a generation. Use editing or stem tools for audio that already exists.

How many exclusions should I use?

Start with one to three closely related targets. Add more only after you identify what the first generation got wrong.
