Should I Tell People My Song Was Made With AI? Ask Jack!
Gary WhittakerShould I Tell People My Song Was Made With AI?
Be honest about meaningful AI use without letting the software replace the song, the story or the creator—and do not confuse disclosure about a recording with disclosure about who the artist is.
Yes: disclose meaningful AI use when a platform requires it, when a buyer or collaborator needs to understand the product, or when leaving it out would create a false impression.
But honesty does not require putting “AI-GENERATED” in every title, caption, artist name and thumbnail. Describe what AI generated, describe what you contributed and keep the public presentation accurate.
AI-generated, AI-assisted and artist identity are not interchangeable labels.
The July 2026 voluntary music-industry framework distinguishes AI-Generated from AI-Assisted recordings based on how generative AI contributed to the audible recording. Spotify separately uses artist-profile authenticity signals for its Verified by Spotify program.
A human artist can release an AI-generated recording. A fictional artist can release a human-performed recording. The recording and the identity must be evaluated separately.
You Are Actually Answering Five Questions
Follow the platform's disclosure system before inventing your own.
YouTube
Use YouTube's altered or synthetic content disclosure where its current rules require it. A description hashtag is not a substitute for a formal platform field.
Spotify and distributors
Spotify AI Credits describe how AI contributed to a track; they do not declare that the artist profile itself represents an AI persona.
At launch, Spotify says profiles that appear to primarily represent AI-generated or AI-persona artists are not eligible for Verified by Spotify, while artists using AI responsibly can remain eligible if they present themselves authentically.
Beginning mid-September 2026, Spotify says profiles designated as AI Personas will receive an AI Persona badge and will not be included by default in editorial or algorithmic recommendations. Listeners can still reach or follow those profiles. Spotify can also apply the designation after reviewing a profile, so this is not only a voluntary-disclosure decision.
TikTok, Instagram and Facebook
Follow current creator-applied or technical AI labels and do not treat a label as permission to impersonate, mislead or use another person's identity without authorization.
Not Every AI Music Workflow Is the Same
AI-Generated Recording
Generative AI created the lead vocal, key instrumental performance, most of the audible recording or the complete track from prompts. Human-written lyrics, direction, selection and editing may still be substantial contributions.
AI-Assisted Recording
Humans performed the lead vocal and primary instruments while generative AI supplied limited expressive material.
Human-Performed, AI-Supported
The final audible performance is human while AI helped with planning, editing, mixing, mastering or other supporting work.
Synthetic or Fictional Artist Project
A human-managed project uses a constructed performer identity, synthetic voice or generated visual character. The audience should not be led to believe the fictional performer is a real independent person with experiences or performances that never occurred.
Recording disclosure and artist identity are separate.
Spotify's current Verified by Spotify guidance looks for signs of a real artist represented by the profile. At launch, profiles that appear to primarily represent AI-generated or AI-persona artists are not eligible for verification. Spotify also states that responsible use of AI does not itself disqualify an artist who presents authentically.
Beginning mid-September 2026, Spotify says AI Persona profiles will also carry an AI Persona badge and be excluded by default from editorial and algorithmic recommendations. This makes artist-identity presentation a discovery decision as well as an authenticity decision.
Practical rule: using AI does not automatically make the artist an AI Persona. Presenting a synthetic person as a real independent singer is a different authenticity issue. Spotify's published review description currently focuses on profiles that appear to represent photorealistic AI-generated identities; it has not publicly defined every edge case for illustrated characters, aliases, hybrid bands or other virtual-artist formats.
Define Your AI Artist in 7 Days →The false-impression test
Ask whether your presentation implies something that did not happen. Higher-risk examples include:
- claiming you sang a generated vocal;
- presenting a fictional artist as a real person without context;
- using a synthetic voice to imply a real celebrity participated;
- marketing a generated recording as a live performance;
- inventing concerts, interviews, endorsements or career history;
- claiming full copyright or exclusivity without evidence.
The closer the use gets to money, licensing, rights claims or another person's reputation, the more precise your disclosure and documentation should become.
Disclosure wording you can adapt
What disclosure does not solve
Disclosure does not create commercial rights. Your plan, licence, source material and agreements still matter.
Disclosure does not authorize a voice or identity. A label does not provide permission to clone or impersonate someone.
Disclosure does not guarantee distribution, verification or recommendation exposure. Platforms can still apply authenticity, rights, spam, quality and discovery rules.
Disclosure does not prove authorship. Human contribution and evidence remain separate.
Be transparent about meaningful AI use, but make the disclosure match the actual question: the recording, the artist identity, or both.
Put the song and its purpose first. Keep process information easy to find. Make sure the audience is never asked to believe a fabricated performance, person or contribution is real.
Spotify artist-identity guidance was reviewed August 23, 2026 against Spotify's official Verified by Spotify guidance and its August 11 AI Persona announcement. Spotify says the badge begins appearing mid-September; AI Persona profiles will not be included by default in editorial or algorithmic recommendations, and Spotify can apply the designation after review rather than relying only on self-disclosure.
