Image Guidance + Elements: Choose the Right Consistency Layer
Consistency is not one feature. It is a production requirement. Leonardo gives you several ways to carry information forward; use the lightest method that reliably preserves what matters.
Reference first, train later
Use when a face/person identity should remain recognizable while pose, scene or treatment can vary.
Use when the visual language—texture, palette, illustration treatment or photographic character—matters more than exact content.
Use when composition, shapes, layout or subject arrangement should influence the new image.
Use when a reusable identity, product, character or style must survive many generations/projects and ordinary references are not enough.
Build a consistency brief
Separate fixed identity from allowed variation. If everything is locked, the work becomes rigid. If nothing is locked, it drifts.
Allowed: pose, camera distance, environment, expression, wardrobe variation, weather, story action—when the project permits them.
Reference quality protocol
Choose clean source material that clearly shows the thing you are asking the system to preserve. Avoid making one reference do three contradictory jobs. A heavily stylized face used as both identity and composition reference can create confusion.
Strength is a creative control
Higher influence is not automatically better. Too little can drift; too much can prevent useful variation or inherit unwanted details. Use controlled tests: same prompt, same destination, one reference-strength change at a time.
When an Element is justified
- A recurring AI artist or character appears across releases.
- A product must remain recognizable in many environments.
- A brand has a deliberately repeatable illustration/visual style.
- A series needs enough consistency that manually rebuilding references every time becomes the bottleneck.
Do not train an Element from weak or contradictory source material and expect the training step to decide your identity for you. Curate first.
Consistency QA
- Can a viewer recognize the intended identity without being told?
- Did the reference preserve the right trait rather than unrelated source details?
- Are repeated assets clearly part of one visual system?
- Does allowed variation still feel intentional?
- Can you reproduce the result with your saved references and notes?
Bridge into video
Once the still identity is stable, use it as a video anchor. Start/end frames, saved video frames and reference-driven motion work better when the source still is already approved. Continue to Leonardo Video Continuity.
