Before You Release It, Investigate It.
Publishing, releasing, printing, selling, licensing, pitching, or distributing creative work creates responsibilities that a similarity score or quick search cannot settle. This clearance system gives creators a documented way to investigate material risk before commercial release.

This is an educational risk-reduction and documentation workflow. It is not legal advice, a legal opinion, or a guarantee of non-infringement. A clean search does not prove that a work is legally cleared. High-risk or unresolved issues belong with an appropriately qualified professional.
The JR Clearance Method
Look for prior works, names, phrases, images, recordings, sources, licences, and other relevant material.
Investigate meaningful hits. Similarity deserves context, not panic or automatic dismissal.
Document where your material came from: drafts, source files, references, contributors, prompts, licences, permissions, and human decisions.
Resolve issues through revision, replacement, permission, licence, release, attribution where appropriate, or professional review.
Preserve the search record, decisions, evidence, versions, licences, approvals, and remaining risk.
When the decision exceeds a creator checklist, prepare a focused handoff for a qualified professional.
What are you actually checking?
- Copyright and expression: text, lyrics, music, recordings, images, illustrations, characters, protected adaptations, and other expressive material.
- Trademark and market identity: titles where relevant, series names, brands, logos, imprints, artist or pen names, and confusingly similar market identifiers.
- Licensing and provenance: stock, fonts, samples, references, source material, collaborator contributions, AI inputs, and the terms attached to them.
- Likeness, voice, identity and impersonation: recognizable people, voices, personas, or representations that create additional rights or platform concerns.
- Your own authorship record: the human contribution, revisions, creative decisions, drafts, prompts or generation history, and source files that help explain how the work was made.
Use the clearance level the project deserves
Level 1 · Manual Self-Check
Search the project title/name, variants, distinctive material, relevant concepts, important sources, licences, and known red flags. Preserve what you searched and what you found.
Level 2 · Free Tools & Public Databases
Use appropriate search, catalogue, registry, reverse-search, recognition, or public-record tools. No single database is complete. Record queries, dates, results, potential matches, and evidence.
Level 3 · Paid or Professional-Grade Tools
Use stronger tools when the commercial stakes, volume, source complexity, or ambiguity justify them. Record the tool, corpus/scope, result, interpretation, privacy/retention considerations, and follow-up.
Level 4 · Qualified Professional Review
Escalate material copyright, trademark, publishing, media, entertainment, licensing, personality-rights, or other unresolved legal questions to the appropriate professional. Give them the evidence pack rather than asking them to reconstruct the project from scratch.
Choose the branch that matches the work
Facts, sources, quotations, titles, third-party material, public domain, contributors, images, real people, AI provenance, and currentness.
Separate words/lyrics, composition/melody, sound recording, samples, references, voice/likeness, contributors, and generation provenance.
Source, reverse-search results, recognizable people, logos/signage, stock/reference terms, metadata and provenance.
Exact and similar uses, market context, relevant trademark registers, goods/services, common-law use, and launch territories.
Risk rating is a decision aid—not a legal verdict
GREEN — no meaningful material hit after reasonable review; provenance and licences documented.
YELLOW — weak similarity, incomplete provenance, or another issue needs further investigation.
ORANGE — meaningful match, uncertain licence, recognizable similarity, identity conflict, or comparable concern; pause the release decision.
RED — known protected material without required permission, confirmed unauthorized use, strong identity/trademark conflict, active rights dispute, or another issue that should block commercial release until resolved.
Build the evidence pack
A serious project should preserve the final version, drafts/source files, relevant prompt or generation history, tool/licence evidence, search log, important screenshots/links/IDs, licences, permissions/releases, collaborator or ownership records, paid-tool reports when used, professional opinions when obtained, final risk rating, and final decision.
The point is not paperwork for its own sake. The point is to make important creative and commercial decisions reconstructable later.
When to reopen clearance
Recheck the record when the work materially changes: a new title/name, rewritten passages or lyrics, regenerated/replaced AI assets, new samples or references, a new cover/image, a new collaborator, changed AI/tool terms, changed commercial territory, new distributor/publisher/client requirements, or a credible third-party rights complaint.
The release decision
A documented record can support decisions such as: proceed; proceed with documented residual risk; revise; rename; replace material; obtain a licence; obtain a release; obtain professional review; hold; or abandon.
Do not turn “nothing obvious came up in my search” into “I am legally cleared.” The quality of the decision depends on the project, the evidence, the rights involved, the markets involved, and the level of review the stakes justify.
