Lock or Validate the One Song

WHERE YOU ARE: You have at least one serious candidate. Label-Ready begins when one exact recording becomes the controlled professional candidate. If MAKE IT or MEAN IT already locked that exact version, import and validate the decision instead of selecting it again.

YOU SHOULD ALREADY HAVE

  • At least one complete candidate song.
  • Access to the exact audio version being advanced—or the exact versions still being compared.
  • A reason this song matters now: challenge entry, release, campaign, collaboration test or professional review.
  • If already completed: the MAKE IT → MEAN IT Handoff Record and/or MEAN IT Song Completion Record tied to the candidate.

THE DECISION

Is the exact lead candidate already validly locked upstream, or does Label-Ready still need to make the selection?

REUSE → VALIDATE → ADD. If an upstream JR record already names the exact active song/version and no later material change invalidated that decision, import it. Do not repeat version selection simply because you entered Label-Ready.

DO THE WORK

If the candidate is already locked upstream:

  1. Import the exact filename/version and the record that locked it.
  2. Confirm the audio file you have now is the same version described by that record.
  3. Confirm no later music, lyric, vocal or arrangement change materially invalidated the upstream approval.
  4. Confirm any MEAN IT completion evidence still matches this exact track.
  5. Record why the imported candidate remains valid for Label-Ready.

If the candidate is not already locked:

  1. Name the song.
  2. Give each serious version a unique version label.
  3. Listen from beginning to end without editing.
  4. Compare song strength, vocal presentation, arrangement, technical defects and identity.
  5. Select one lead version and one backup only if the backup has a defined reason to exist.
  6. Write one sentence explaining why the lead version won.
Do not choose by attachment alone. Choose the version that best survives the full song, communicates the intended identity and requires the least risky repair to reach release standard.

  • backup filename if one has a defined purpose;
  • whether the candidate was IMPORTED from upstream evidence or NEWLY SELECTED here;
  • upstream record location(s);
  • MEAN IT completion status, if applicable;
  • date and description of the last material music or voice change;
  • Label-Ready purpose;
  • one-sentence reason the candidate remains the correct lead.

IF THE SONG CHANGED AFTER MEAN IT

Do not preserve a stale approval. If a later music change materially affects lyric phrasing, section function, vocal space, narrator meaning or another MEAN IT decision, route the affected evidence back through MEAN IT / Voice CONTROL, then return here with the new exact version. A filename change alone is not automatically material; the creative effect determines the route.

DO NOT ADVANCE IF

  • You still refer to multiple versions as “the final.”
  • You cannot identify the exact audio file being advanced.
  • An imported upstream record describes a different material version.
  • A post-MEAN IT music change invalidated lyric/vocal evidence and has not been re-tested.
  • You already know the chosen version has a structural or vocal problem so large that another version is clearly stronger.
