The Final File Format Is a Delivery Decision—Not a Superstition

Sample rate, bit depth, dither and encoding describe how digital audio is stored or converted. They matter because a finished mix can be technically mishandled after the creative work is done. The correct format depends on the source, the workflow and the actual destination specification.

Core rule: preserve a high-quality source/master, avoid unnecessary repeated conversions, and create destination versions from that controlled source. Do not keep converting lossy files back and forth and expect quality to return.

Four essential terms

Sample rate

How many audio samples per second represent the waveform. A change in sample rate requires resampling; use the rate required by the project/destination rather than assuming a larger number is automatically better.

Bit depth

For PCM audio, bit depth relates to the resolution available for amplitude values and usable dynamic range/noise floor. It is not the same thing as bitrate.

Dither

A very low-level noise process used when reducing PCM bit depth to decorrelate quantization distortion. It belongs at the actual bit-depth-reduction stage—not repeatedly throughout the workflow.

Encoding / codec

How audio is stored or compressed. WAV/AIFF commonly contain uncompressed PCM; FLAC is lossless compression; MP3/AAC and similar formats are lossy.

The safest format workflow

  1. Identify the authoritative source. Use the highest-quality valid project/render you control—not an MP3 downloaded from a messaging app if the lossless master still exists.
  2. Identify the destination. Distributor, video editor, sync client, collaborator, archive, mastering engineer or another defined use.
  3. Read the current specification. Sample rate, bit depth, channel format and accepted codec belong to the destination.
  4. Keep production/master processing at an appropriate high-resolution internal format. Do not down-convert early simply because one final destination wants a smaller file.
  5. Resample only when required. Use one controlled conversion from the authoritative source.
  6. Reduce bit depth only when required. Apply appropriate dither at that reduction stage when the workflow calls for it.
  7. Create lossy delivery copies from the lossless source. Do not use a lossy file as the new master.
  8. Verify the rendered file. Reopen/listen, check metadata/format and confirm start/end/channel integrity.
  9. Label versions clearly. Master, archive, client, video, MP3 preview, etc.
  10. Preserve the conversion record.

Sample-rate decisions

The source/project rate should normally remain stable during production unless a justified technical need requires conversion. Final delivery may require another rate. Resampling is a mathematical conversion and should be treated as a real processing step—not repeated casually.

Do not confuse sample rate with musical quality. Changing a finished file to a higher sample rate does not recreate information that was never present in the source.

Bit-depth and dither decisions

Higher working bit depths can provide useful processing/headroom behavior in production environments. When a final PCM file must be delivered at a lower bit depth, dither may be appropriate at the reduction. Avoid repeatedly dithering a file through multiple stages.

If you are not reducing bit depth, do not add dither merely because a mastering checklist says “always dither.” Follow the actual render path and tool documentation.

Lossless vs lossy

Type Typical role Key rule

FLAC Lossless storage/delivery where supported. Compression is reversible; confirm destination compatibility.
MP3 / AAC / other lossy codec Preview, web/video/platform delivery where required. Create from the lossless master; do not repeatedly transcode lossy→lossy.

Common conversion mistakes

Mistake Correction
Upsampling an MP3 and calling it a hi-res master Upsampling changes format, not the lost source information. Find the best original source.
Dithering every export Apply dither intentionally at the relevant bit-depth reduction.
Converting a file several times before upload Create destination files directly from the authoritative master where practical.
Using bitrate and bit depth interchangeably Bit depth describes PCM amplitude resolution; bitrate usually describes data rate, often in encoded formats.
Assuming every distributor/client wants the same file Verify the current destination specification.
Deleting the high-quality master after making a small delivery file Preserve the authoritative lossless version and project/source lineage.

Conversion order matters

A practical final route is usually: approved high-quality master → required sample-rate conversion → required bit-depth reduction/dither → final encoding/delivery copy, with exact order adjusted to the tool/workflow and destination. Preserve the unconverted master so the destination version can always be recreated.

Success criteria: you can distinguish sample rate, bit depth, dither and encoding, identify the actual destination requirement, create the required delivery file from a controlled high-quality source, avoid unnecessary degradation and preserve the authoritative master.
