Building a Successful Playlist to Elevate Your Music
Reggae Roots and Rhythms: Building Your Path to Music Success
Playlists are essential for artists to connect with their audience, showcase their work, and test their songs’ potential. With Reggae Roots Oh Jah, I’ve carefully curated a playlist featuring reggae classics, modern tracks, and my own music, including my EP Jack Righteous Origins Vol 1. This playlist highlights the importance of thoughtful placement, long-term strategy, and self-improvement as an artist.
The Journey of Jack Righteous and Reggae Roots Oh Jah
As an artist, my journey has been about finding ways to connect with my audience while challenging myself to grow. Playlists like Reggae Roots Oh Jah are a core part of that journey, and I recommend every music creator do something similar in a way that fits their goals and situation.
The Name Matters
The name Reggae Roots Oh Jah reflects my musical vision:
- Reggae Roots captures the core of the music I create and love.
- Oh Jah ties to one of the most defining lyrical elements in my songs.
Choosing a name that resonates with both the listener and your identity as an artist helps create an emotional connection and lasting impression.
Playlist Focus
To keep this playlist digestible for both the listener and myself, I limit it to fewer than 50 songs. This approach ensures I can listen to it regularly (weekly) and stay connected to my own work.
1-Year and 3-Year Goals
- 1-Year Goal: By the end of 2025, all 12 tracks from my upcoming debut album Holy Fire! will be featured on this playlist.
- 3-Year Goal: Each of those 12 tracks will be remastered to meet full copyright approval requirements, ensuring their quality and longevity in the industry.
By setting clear goals, I’m not just promoting my music—I’m building a sustainable foundation for long-term success.
Navigating the Business Side of Playlists
-
Beware of Predatory Practices:
New artists are often targeted by people pretending to be fans but are only interested in selling expensive playlist placements. Paying for placement comes with significant risks, including deplatforming on Spotify. While some artists claim they didn’t pay for playlisting but still got banned, the best safeguard is avoiding any suspicious opportunities. Focus instead on legitimate methods like DistroKid’s Wheel of Playlist to grow organically. -
Strategic Song Placement:
The placement of your song within a playlist is critical. It’s not just about adding your music but ensuring it complements the playlist’s mood and flow. For example, I strategically positioned my five tracks in Reggae Roots Oh Jah, including two back-to-back pairs, to match the energy of the preceding and following songs. My strongest track, Sanctuary, ends the playlist, leaving a lasting impression. -
Test Your Song Against Its Audience:
One of the best ways to evaluate your music’s impact is by testing it in a playlist. I’ve released dozens of songs, but none matched the success of Sanctuary. Why? Because it resonated with the intended audience and fit the playlist's theme perfectly. Playlists help you refine your craft, allowing you to adjust mixing, mastering, or even song elements before re-releasing a remastered version that can better compete with your favorite tracks.
