How to Tell When AI Has Started Flattening Your Voice

AI Writing Assistance · Find Your Voice · Public Lesson 14

This lesson is part of the public AI Writing Assistance series: practical training you can use now, with a deeper Find Your Voice practice available where your access includes it.

AI flattening often looks like improvement at first: cleaner grammar, smoother transitions and fewer rough edges. The problem is that the writing can stop sounding like a person.

The Jack Righteous approach

Look for loss of specificity, rhythm, opinion and natural variation—not just grammatical correctness.

Use this workflow

  1. Compare the original and AI-edited versions side by side.
  2. Highlight phrases only you would likely have written.
  3. Look for generic transitions, repeated sentence patterns and inflated phrasing.
  4. Check whether strong opinions became safer or vaguer.
  5. Restore useful irregularities that carry personality or emphasis.

Why this matters

AI can move quickly enough that a weak assumption becomes polished before you notice it. A stronger workflow makes the important choices visible earlier: what the source material actually says, what belongs to your voice, what the reader needs, and what still requires human judgment.

A prompt you can actually use

Copy and adapt:

Compare my original and revised drafts. Identify where clarity improved and where the revision became more generic, cautious, uniform or detached from my original emphasis. Do not rewrite anything until I review the diagnosis.

What a useful AI response should do

A useful response should help you inspect the material, not hide the reasoning under better prose. You should be able to see which patterns came from your source material, which conclusions are tentative, and which choices still belong to you.

Your five-minute exercise

The strongest phrase in my original is: ______________________________

The most generic phrase in the rewrite is: ______________________________

One opinion that became weaker is: ______________________________

One change I want to keep is: ______________________________

What the human still decides

AI can help with pattern recognition, organization, questions, alternatives and editing. You still decide what is true, what sounds like you, what belongs in the project, what is safe to publish and what deserves to become a reusable rule.
