Shape the Energy

Energy is not just volume. A section can feel bigger because more is happening, the rhythm becomes more active, the foreground changes, the space opens or the performance becomes more intense.

What you will finish

One Energy Decision: compare two sections, identify the relationship you want, change one useful lever and decide whether the song moved closer to your goal.

Four simple energy levers

Density

How many layers or musical events are active at once?

Rhythmic activity

Does the beat, bass, percussion or phrase movement become busier or more restrained?

Foreground & register

What owns attention, and does an important sound move higher, lower, wider or become more exposed?

Dynamics & space

Does the performance grow or pull back? Does the section become more open, intimate, wide or forceful?

A chorus does not have to be louder to feel bigger.

Sometimes the better decision is to make the verse smaller so the chorus has somewhere to go.

Map two connected sections

SECTION A: __________ · current energy 1–5: ___ · wanted energy 1–5: ___

SECTION B: __________ · current energy 1–5: ___ · wanted energy 1–5: ___

THE RELATIONSHIP I WANT: __________

2–3 THINGS I MUST PROTECT: __________

Choose one lever

Do not change everything. Pick the smallest lever that could create the contrast you want:

  • add or remove one layer;
  • make the rhythm more or less active;
  • change what owns the foreground;
  • change register or performance intensity;
  • create more or less space.

Run the test

MY PREDICTION: __________

WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGED: __________

UNEXPECTED SIDE EFFECT: __________

DECISION: keep / revise / restore

WHY: __________

How do you know Level 2 is complete?

  • You analyzed a reference for decisions without using it as a copying target.
  • You described your sound through musical traits rather than only a genre or artist name.
  • You gave each retained section a job.
  • You shaped one section-to-section energy relationship deliberately.
  • You completed at least one controlled test and can explain what it taught you.

Complete your Level 2 record

Put the four milestones together in your My Song Build Map. That becomes the evidence that you did more than generate a track—you directed how the song was built.

Do not redo your answers. Carry forward, copy or summarize the work you already completed in Lessons 5–8.
