A reference song is useful when it helps you notice decisions—not when it becomes something to copy.
You already know how to make and compare versions. Now learn to hear what a finished track is doing so you can choose which ideas are useful for your own project.

What does the main voice or foreground element do—restrained, aggressive, smooth, conversational, rhythmic?

What changes when the song moves from one section to another?
5 · Identity
Which hook, melody, lyric, riff, voice or distinctive feature belongs to that song and should not be carried into yours?
Reference the decision. Rebuild the expression.
“The chorus feels larger because more voices enter” is a useful observation. Copying the chorus melody, lyrics or recognizable performance identity is not the goal.
