AI Music Catalog Protection & Registration Batch Planner

A practical system for creators managing dozens, hundreds or thousands of AI songs. Organize your recordings, separate human-authored lyrics from AI-generated material, preserve Suno commercial-use evidence, and prepare eligible works for copyright registration without paying to file everything indiscriminately.

Your outcome: a catalog rights register, a review queue and a registration preparation sheet. These are working records—not a copyright certificate or legal opinion.

Start with the existing guides: What AI-assisted lyric authors can protect · Per-song Lyric Rights Workstation · Protecting your music as a business asset.

1. Build your master catalog register

Record one row per underlying work, then track each audio version separately when its recording, creation method, licensing status or release history differs. A remake does not erase the evidence associated with the earlier version. Use stable work identifiers such as SONG-0001 and version identifiers such as SONG-0001-V02.

Record group Minimum fields Question resolved
Identity Work ID, song title, version ID, album/project, creator and storage location Which composition and recording are we talking about?
Creation Original date, Suno model, generation URL, source files and prompts reference How and when was it made?
Human authorship Lyric writer(s), dated drafts, human/AI contribution notes and split status What original human expression can be supported?
Platform rights Plan at generation, download date, subscription evidence, applicable terms, licence status What commercial-use permission is documented?
Publication Unreleased/streamed/downloaded/sold, dates, territory, distributor and identifiers What is the publication history relevant to registration?
Third-party concerns Borrowed text, samples, voice likeness, interpolations or collaborator disputes What needs clearance or further review?
Decision status Priority, proposed filing route, batch ID, reviewer, next action and filing reference What do we do with this work next?

For more detailed songwriter splits, lyrics versions and evidence packaging, use the existing Lyric Rights Workstation. The master register above is designed to manage the full catalog rather than replace the per-song record.

2. Classify the lyrics without overclaiming

  • H — Human-written lyrics: original human expression with identified writers and supporting evidence.
  • M — Mixed lyrics: human writing and AI-generated material coexist. Record which portions may be claimed, excluded or disclosed under the intended registration system.
  • A — AI-generated lyrics: no sufficient human-authored expression established. Do not claim that buying a Suno plan created U.S. lyric copyright.
  • X — Exception: split dispute, missing creation history, borrowed lyrics, uncertain commercial licence or unresolved publication record.

A classification is an administrative finding, not a final legal opinion. The human-written lyrics and Suno-generated recording are separate rights questions; keep separate evidence for each.

3. Audit a high-volume catalog in five passes

  1. Inventory: identify unique underlying songs, alternate takes and exact files. Do not confuse a thousand generations with a thousand different compositions.
  2. Commercial permissions: document the Suno tier in effect when each generation was created and the download/terms history for the exact output.
  3. Authorship: compare lyric drafts, contributions, collaborators and claimed portions.
  4. Publication: distinguish internal drafts, public streams, licensed downloads and sales. Publication under U.S. law depends on actual circumstances, not simply a platform's “published” label.
  5. Triage: place each work in READY TO REVIEW, NEEDS PROOF, NEEDS CLEARANCE or HOLD/ARCHIVE.
Older Suno songs: pre-V6 status alone does not determine legality. Historical account tier, licence terms, authorized downloads, human contributions and potential third-party rights must be evaluated. Copyright registration of lyrics does not clear the recording.

4. Choose the filing route before paying

Government copyright registration, royalty-society registration (such as SOCAN, ASCAP or BMI), a Suno commercial licence and distributor acceptance are four distinct matters. Record which one you need. Group registration can reduce filing costs, but only for works that actually satisfy the applicable rules.

Potential government route Critical eligibility checkpoint Illustrative fee*
Canada: CIPO online Confirm original work, author/claimant, appropriate scope and the filing requirements. CA$63 per application
U.S.: single-author online Qualifying single work by the same individual author and claimant, not made for hire, subject to current rules. US$45
U.S.: Standard Application Use when a special registration route does not fit; disclose/exclude AI material where required. US$65
U.S.: group of unpublished works (GRUW) Two to ten qualifying unpublished works; matching author/claimant and class requirements; separate deposits; verify AI-content eligibility. US$85 per qualifying group
U.S.: group of works on an album (GRAM) Qualifying album with eligible published works, album-level publication requirements, authorship and claimant restrictions. US$65 per qualifying group

*Illustrative government fees based on the October 2026 review; verify the current fee and available filing method before paying. Fees are not legal fees or a guaranteed total.

Cost example, not an eligibility promise: 100 genuinely eligible unpublished works could require ten GRUW applications at US$85 each (US$850 total). The same arithmetic is not automatically valid for 100 previously released recordings, works with different writers, or mixed AI-generated claims. Album-group registration cannot be used merely by labelling unrelated tracks as a new album.

5. Complete a batch eligibility worksheet

For each proposed group, create one worksheet with these fields. A reviewer should be able to reconstruct why the group qualifies without asking you to explain it from memory.

Field What to record
Batch ID and intended government form Identifier; registration category; country; estimated fee; official instructions reviewed on [date]
Work IDs and deposit list Exact list of works, filenames, file versions and number of distinct works
Authors and claimants Identical or differing writers/claimants; evidence for every collaborator
Publication history Unpublished/published determination with distribution facts and evidence
AI content and claim scope Human-authored material claimed; AI material excluded or disclosed when required
Exceptions and decision Unresolved items; owner; reviewer; FILE / HOLD / REFER / NOT ELIGIBLE
Submission record Actual filing date, fee, application ID and resulting registration number when provided

6. Worked example: 120 music files

Suppose a creator has 120 audio files representing 75 underlying songs and 45 alternate generations. Of the 75 works, 40 have evidenced human-written lyrics, 15 have mixed lyric sources, 10 include uncleared third-party samples, and 10 have incomplete Suno licensing records.

  1. De-duplicate the 120 audio files into their 75 underlying works while retaining version histories.
  2. Send the 40 evidenced lyric works to copyright-filing eligibility review—do not assume they all qualify for one batch.
  3. Send the 15 mixed works to contribution/disclosure analysis.
  4. Hold the 10 sample-related works for third-party clearance and the 10 uncertain recordings for licence reconstruction.
  5. Confirm publication history, writers, claimants and deposits before choosing any U.S. group registration form.
The target is not “register everything.” It is identify what is protectable, document what you control, and spend only where filing is appropriate. A creator with 1,000 works follows the same decisions with more structured records and review capacity.

7. Finish the ASK JACK member exercise

Use seven work sessions: 1) inventory, 2) creation/subscription evidence, 3) lyric authorship, 4) third-party rights and collaborator splits, 5) publication classification, 6) filing options and costs, 7) final review queue and responsibility assignments.

Save the register and supporting files under your own control. Use your browser's Print → Save as PDF for a reading copy of this workbook. Avoid pasting contracts, client information, song masters or sensitive songwriter records into public AI tools.

Continue the learning path: Free: understand lyrics and government copyright → Free: protect your commercial assets → ASK JACK: detailed song evidence → Creator Pro: test evidence and professional handoff. The Complete Access operating-system resource will extend this into recurring portfolio governance.
