Mary Magdalene & the Empty Tomb: First Witness Traditions Across the Four Gospels

Mary Magdalene is one of the strongest points of continuity across the resurrection narratives: every canonical Gospel places her in the empty-tomb tradition.

The women differ across the accounts

Mark names Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome. Matthew names Mary Magdalene and “the other Mary.” Luke names Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James and other women. John initially focuses on Mary Magdalene.

The messengers, movements and appearance sequence also vary. That diversity is evidence we should compare, not hide.

Does Jesus appear to Mary first?

John gives Mary an extended individual encounter in which she initially fails to recognize Jesus and then recognizes him when addressed by name. Matthew depicts Jesus meeting the women. Mark’s earliest recoverable ending stops at the women fleeing the tomb in fear; the familiar appearances in Mark 16:9–20 belong to a later ending absent from the earliest manuscripts.

Therefore, saying Mary is a foundational resurrection witness is secure. Saying every Gospel explicitly narrates Jesus appearing to her first is not.

Mary Magdalene is not identified as a prostitute

The Gospels describe her as a follower from whom seven demons had gone out and as a supporter of Jesus’ movement. The identification of Mary Magdalene with the unnamed sinful woman of Luke 7 is later Western tradition, not a statement in the New Testament.
