Gqom is not simply “dark African house.” This lesson helps you hear and direct the relationships that make a Gqom result work: broken rhythmic cycles, forceful percussion, low-end punctuation, negative space, repetition and pressure.

1. Start with Durban, not a mood word
Gqom emerged from Durban, South Africa, in the early 2010s through a young DIY production and circulation culture. 6. Build the protected baseline
Generate or construct one baseline from the Brief. Judge it in this order:

- Density: did the system fill the arrangement because you asked for “energy”?
