1. Start with the ensemble

Bluegrass became a distinct American roots style in the 1940s around Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys while drawing on older string-band, Appalachian, blues, gospel and related American traditions. A classic ensemble language includes five-string banjo, flat-top guitar, fiddle, mandolin and upright bass.
