Shopify Launch Checklist for Creators & Sellers
Gary WhittakerShopify Launch Checklist for Creators & Content Sellers
Build the store with a plan—not a pile of apps. You can create a private Shopify account before all your products and marketing materials are ready. This guide walks through signup, preparation, setup and launch checks. The real goal is a store people can understand, use and trust.
STEP 0 · ACCOUNT SIGNUP · UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
Choose the right signup route before creating the store
If you're creating your own first Shopify store: follow the merchant signup steps below. If you're building a store for a client: stop before clicking Create another store from your existing Shopify admin. A store added under your current business is not automatically a qualified affiliate referral.
Which client setup route fits?
Affiliate referral: The new merchant independently signs up through the JR referral link using their own business account. A qualifying affiliate commission is considered when that referred merchant pays for an eligible full-price plan. Referral tracking is managed in Impact; tracking a click does not guarantee an eligible conversion. If you're already logged into your own Shopify account, use a separate private browser session for the new merchant's signup—do not use your existing store's Create store button for this route.
Shopify Partner client transfer: If you are contracted to build a client's store, a Shopify Partner can create a client transfer store through the Partner Dev Dashboard, build it privately, and transfer it to the client. Under Shopify's current terms, eligible transfers can earn 20% of eligible subscription fees and 0.1% of eligible online GMV for up to four years. Trade-off: After transfer, the client transfer store is not eligible for free trials or introductory promotions. These are separate referral routes; do not assume both commissions apply.
Verify affiliate tracking: Look for the new Free Trial action in your Impact account after an eligible referred signup. Shopify's standard click window is 30 days; after a tracked trial, Shopify can follow the eligible conversion to a full-price plan for up to 400 days. If a referral is missing, contact affiliates@shopify.com with the merchant's new myshopify.com URL. The final eligibility decision belongs to Shopify.

Merchant signup: step by step
- Start through my Shopify affiliate signup link. Read the offer and billing conditions on Shopify's actual signup page.
- Use the business owner's account. Sign up with the owner's email or supported sign-in method. If someone else is building the site, add them later using appropriate collaborator access.
- Answer the setup questions, or skip optional questions. If moving an established website from Wix, choose the existing-business/Wix options if shown.
-
Save the store name and
myshopify.comaddress. Shopify limits changes to that internal store domain; choose carefully. - Review the trial and payment screen. Shopify Canada currently advertises 3 days free, then $1/month for 3 months to eligible new merchants. Eligibility and terms can change. Add billing only when required or appropriate; Shopify may offer a Skip option during initial signup.
- Open Shopify Admin. Keep the new storefront private while you build and test it. Do not switch over your public domain before launch checks pass.
Migrating Wix to Shopify? Leave the current Wix site live during setup. If you are keeping your existing domain and Google Workspace email, preserve the current DNS and email records. Plan the domain connection and any URL redirects for launch, not for account signup.

Why Preparation Still Matters
Too many creators jump into Shopify, upload a few products, and hope for sales. The reality is, success comes from building traffic and trust with your audience before your store goes live. This checklist ensures you’re ready to collect emails, build your audience, and launch with a strategy that drives real engagement and sales from day one.
Step 1: Define Your Brand
Your brand is more than a name—it’s the message and experience you create for your audience.
Action Steps:
- Finalize your brand name (check domain availability & social handles via Namecheap or GoDaddy).
- Design your logo (Canva is a great free tool).
- Choose your brand colors and fonts (Coolors.co is helpful).
- Create a folder with your assets: logo, images, fonts, product mockups.
- Clearly define your mission and target audience.
- Identify your unique value proposition (how are you different?).
- Research competitors (study 2-3 successful creators in your niche).
- Run a quick audience validation survey or Instagram poll to confirm demand.
- Draft your brand story for your About page.
Step 2: Set Up Social Media Profiles
Your store will need traffic—social media is where you start building that.
Action Steps:
- Update Instagram and/or TikTok profiles with your brand look and bio.
- Launch or update your YouTube channel with branding.
- Set up a Facebook Page (optional but useful later for ads).
- Create a Linktree or link-in-bio router with a few stable links such as your free resource, signup, core content and community destinations. Treat it as rented routing; your domain remains the owned home.
- Post an announcement that your brand is launching soon.
- Draft your initial content calendar (focus on behind-the-scenes, product development, tips).
- Research 1-3 core hashtags that work in your niche.
- Start engaging: use Q&A stickers, polls, and ask your audience what they need.
- Create Instagram Story Highlights (e.g., “Coming Soon,” “Free Download,” “Join Us”).
Step 3: Organize Your Product Offerings
Avoid overthinking products. Start simple, with clear categories:
| Product Type | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Free Download | Build email list, drive engagement | Digital checklist, template, mini guide |
| Entry-Level Offer | Convert followers into buyers, test pricing | Starter template pack, low-cost eBook |
| Main Product | Core revenue driver | Full digital bundle, premium course, consulting package |
Action Steps:
- Create your free download (focus on solving 1 small problem for your audience).
- Design an entry-level product (e.g., $10-$25 digital item).
- Outline your main product offer (e.g., $50+ digital bundle or service).
- Gather images and mockups (use Canva or Fiverr for professional visuals).
- Write clear product descriptions (focus on how your product solves problems).
- Research competitor pricing to position your offers effectively.
- Create a “Coming Soon” product page in Shopify to collect interest.
- Build a private early-access group (Discord, Facebook, or IG Close Friends) for pre-launch feedback.
Step 4: Prepare Your Content Engine
Content is what drives traffic and sales—have this ready before your store is live.
Action Steps:
- Plan 2-3 weeks of social content (behind-the-scenes, product teasers, tips).
- Film “progress updates” or “work-in-progress” Reels/Stories.
- Draft teaser posts (e.g., “Free resource coming soon—who wants it first?”).
- Write educational or helpful posts related to your niche.
- Schedule posts using tools like Meta Creator Studio, Later, or Planoly.
- Launch a Pinterest account to drive long-term traffic.
- Activate Shopify’s blog (consider drafting 1 pre-launch post like “Why I Created This Product”).
Step 5: Build Your Pre-Launch Email List
Your email list is your most valuable asset. Start collecting emails early.
Action Steps:
- Build a simple email capture landing page (ConvertKit, Mailchimp, or Shopify).
- Integrate your free download as the opt-in incentive.
- Write a welcome email (thank them, deliver the freebie, offer extra value).
- Draft your launch email (store is live, highlight freebie & special offer).
- Plan a 3-part email follow-up sequence (Welcome, Product Story, Launch Offer).
- Promote your freebie and signup page in every social post and story.
Final Pre-Launch Check
- Brand identity is organized and clear.
- Social profiles are optimized and building anticipation.
- Freebie and product descriptions are finalized.
- Email capture and welcome emails are tested.
- 2-3 weeks of social content is ready and scheduled.
- Pinterest & blog content are prepped (optional).
- Backup folder (Google Drive or Dropbox) holds all key assets.
- Test purchase on Shopify set up (optional but recommended).
When these are complete, you're ready to test the store and prepare for launch. You can create the account earlier; keep the storefront private until the critical checks pass.
BONUS TIPS FOR EARLY MOMENTUM
- Gather feedback early (DM followers, ask for opinions).
- Launch week bonus or discount (e.g., early access, bundle deal).
- Engage heavily with every comment & DM during launch.
- Record your launch journey on Stories (audiences love behind-the-scenes).
- Monitor Shopify analytics & social content performance.
