Spotify AI Credits in 2026: DistroKid Uploads, Suno Disclosure & AI Persona Rules

Spotify can now show listeners which parts of a song were generated with AI. DistroKid gives you fields to disclose those contributions. Neither feature should be confused with an AI Persona badge or a copyright ruling.

If you create music with Suno, record your own vocals over an AI instrumental, or use AI in a more traditional production, the useful question before uploading is not simply “Is this an AI song?” It is which parts did AI generate, which parts did people create, and what can you document?

Spotify launched its AI Credits beta in April 2026 and expanded its work around artist identity and spam over the following months. As of its October 20, 2026 update, Spotify says artists are submitting tens of thousands of AI Credits each day. For independent creators, this means accurate release metadata is now a practical part of professional music distribution.

Quick answer: Before uploading through DistroKid, identify whether AI generated the lyrics, music, all the final audio, or part of the final audio. Select the fields that apply, keep your evidence, and check how the credits appear afterward. Spotify's mobile AI Credits are different from its separate AI Persona artist-profile labels. Official DistroKid instructions.

1. What Spotify AI Credits actually show

Spotify's AI Credits apply to specific creative roles or contributions, not to a blanket classification of the entire recording. Depending on the metadata supplied, they can identify AI use in lyrics, vocals, instrumental performances or production. Spotify says these credits remain a beta feature and are currently visible to listeners in the mobile app, through Song Credits and the Now Playing view. They are not presently a generic “AI song” badge beside every track title.

Spotify receives this information from labels and participating distributors. Disclosures are presently optional within the AI Credits system, and the absence of a visible AI Credit is not evidence that a song was made without AI. Some distributors or listening surfaces may not display every submitted credit, and visibility can change as the rollout evolves.

Spotify's stated approach emphasizes transparency about individual contributions rather than treating every use of AI as identical. Its current help article explains the feature and how listeners find it: Spotify AI Credits overview.

The October 20 company update also discusses stronger anti-spam and artist-identity protections. These are separate policies: an accurate AI Credit is not the same as an automatically rejected upload, but accurate credits also do not guarantee playlist placement, recommendation traffic or immunity from platform review.

2. The DistroKid upload fields creators need to understand

DistroKid's upload flow asks whether any part of a track was generated by AI. If the answer is yes, its current help page tells creators to select at least one of the following categories.

DistroKid field Use it when Important distinction
The lyrics AI generated words that are present in the final song. Do not mark original human-written lyrics as AI-generated merely because you used an AI music platform to sing them.
The music AI generated musical composition, such as melody or other composition material. AI-generated composition and AI-generated sound are related but different contributions.
All of the audio All sounds heard in the final track are AI-generated performances/audio. Human prompting, choosing versions or mastering the file does not by itself make those performances human-recorded.
Part of the audio AI-generated sound is combined with other audio, such as a separately recorded human vocal. Record which actual sections or performances came from each source.

If you select All of the audio, DistroKid also asks whether the artist name represents a human or an AI persona. The purpose is to submit the appropriate identity information with the release; it is not a substitute for checking Spotify's own profile-identity rules.

DistroKid says you can add or update AI Credits after uploading: open your album page and select Credits for the song, or go directly to DistroKid Credits. Confirm any corrections once the receiving service processes them; delivery is not always immediate.

DistroKid distinguishes generated content from tools such as pitch correction, AI-assisted mixing, mastering and other production assistance. Those tools alone do not require generated-content AI Credits under its current guidance. See the official AI Credits definition.

3. Five common AI music workflows and what to document

These examples explain how to reason through the questions; always answer according to the actual final recording and the fields currently presented in your DistroKid account.

How the song was made Likely disclosure approach
AI generated the lyrics, composition, vocals and entire recorded sound. Identify generated lyrics, music and all audio. Keep the tool, generation and licence records.
You wrote every lyric yourself, but Suno generated the composition and complete audible recording. Identify generated music and all audio, not lyrics. Keep dated human lyric drafts separate from the audio-generation record.
You recorded your own lead voice over an AI-generated instrumental and composition. Identify generated music and part of the audio, if those categories accurately describe the final track. Preserve the vocal source and mixing records.
AI generated the words, while humans composed and recorded the rest. Identify generated lyrics. Do not automatically classify the sound recording as AI-generated.
You wrote and recorded everything, using only AI-assisted mastering or pitch correction. DistroKid says those assisted processes alone do not call for generated-content AI Credits. Keep production records as needed.

These are production disclosures, not decisions about whether a composition or recording qualifies for copyright. That is a different question and may vary by jurisdiction, the platform licence and the human contributions involved.

4. AI Credits and AI Persona badges are different

Spotify introduced AI Persona badges for artist identities in 2026. These badges concern who or what the public-facing artist identity represents. They do not simply mean that a person used Suno, ChatGPT or another tool to make a track.

Spotify's current guidance says that using AI music tools while presenting a real person's artist identity, a conventional stage name, or a fictional character that is not a photorealistic AI-generated person does not, by itself, qualify for an AI Persona badge. The company distinguishes these cases from profiles presenting a photorealistic AI-generated individual. Spotify's AI Persona rules and controls explain the categories.

This matters commercially because Spotify's October 20 update says AI Personas are excluded from editorial or algorithmic recommendations by default unless a listener follows that persona. That is a materially different issue from the optional, role-specific AI Credits attached to a song. You should be truthful in both systems, but do not describe an AI Credit as an AI Persona badge, or vice versa.

Spotify also says it is acting against mass-produced spam, duplicate uploads, misleading metadata and artificial engagement. Quality control and an authentic audience-building plan remain important whether your production is human-recorded, AI-assisted or AI-generated.

5. Your pre-upload disclosure and rights checklist

Set up a compact release record before you open DistroKid. It can be one document or spreadsheet, but every important answer should be traceable.

  1. Identify the exact version. Song title, artist identity, final audio filename, version and release date.
  2. Separate human and AI contributions. Who wrote the lyrics? Who composed the melody? Where did the vocals and backing audio originate?
  3. Save tool evidence. AI model or service, generation date, project link, output history and applicable plan/terms.
  4. Record permissions. Uploaded audio, collaborator recordings, samples, voice or likeness consent and third-party material.
  5. Confirm songwriters and other credits. Artist identity and songwriter rights-holder records are different. Do not invent human credits for a model or omit a real collaborator.
  6. Prepare metadata and artwork. Clean title, correct artist mapping, identifiers when assigned, cover rights and explicit-content status.
  7. Decide on Content ID separately. Permission to distribute does not establish exclusive rights to use the audio as an automated claiming reference.
  8. Check delivery after submission. Record your DistroKid selections, then verify credits and store links as they become available. Do not assume every service shows the same fields immediately.

6. What truthful AI Credits do—and do not—prove

Accurate credits are good documentation and help listeners understand the production. They do not automatically establish your ownership of the generated audio, guarantee a commercial licence, clear third-party samples, prove human authorship, establish Content ID exclusivity or secure streaming-platform acceptance.

Do not make the opposite mistake either: disclosure is not automatically an admission that you contributed nothing. A creator might have written original lyrics, recorded a lead vocal, edited arrangements, made significant performance decisions or controlled an original release concept while accurately identifying generated sections.

Spotify's original AI disclosure announcement explained that its goal was greater transparency about how a song was made, rather than punishing responsible use of AI. The company's latest anti-spam and persona rules add important limits to simplistic claims that all AI-related platform treatment is identical. Spotify's disclosure policy background.

7. Put disclosure into a release system—not another upload chore

For Jack Righteous creators, the goal is simple: make a song worth finishing, document how it was made, then release it with clear records and a reason for people to listen.

Use your first DistroKid upload as the template for every future release. Once the metadata and evidence are prepared, review your artist profile, release date and listening links. If your only plan is to upload more AI generations, you are missing the harder work of building a selective, identifiable catalog.
