TikTok Canada 2026: What Changed After the Shutdown Order—and What Creators Should Do Now
A current 2026 guide to TikTok Canada for creators: what happened to the 2024 shutdown order, what Canada decided in March 2026, and how to use TikTok without making one platform your entire audience infrastructure.
TikTok Canada 2026: What Changed After the Shutdown Order—and What Creators Should Do Now
Canada did order TikTok Canada’s business wound up in November 2024. That is no longer the current position. The order was later set aside, the matter was reviewed again, and on March 9, 2026 the Government of Canada allowed TikTok Canada’s investment to proceed subject to new legally binding undertakings.
For creators, the practical lesson is not “leave TikTok.” It is simpler: use TikTok where it helps you reach people, but do not let one platform become the only place your audience can find you.
What changed in Canada?
November 6, 2024: Canada ordered the wind-up of the Canadian business carried on by TikTok Technology Canada Inc. under the Investment Canada Act. The government said at the time that the decision did not block Canadians from accessing TikTok or creating content on the app.
January 2026: the Federal Court, on consent of the Government of Canada and TikTok, set aside the November 2024 order and sent the matter back for a new national-security review.
March 9, 2026: Canada completed that further review and permitted the investment to proceed, subject to new legally binding undertakings from TikTok Canada.
Those undertakings include enhanced protection for Canadians’ personal information, additional safeguards for minors, independent third-party monitoring of data-access controls, a continuing physical presence in Canada, protection of Canadian jobs and commitments to invest in Canadian cultural content and creators.

So should Canadian creators keep using TikTok?
Yes, if TikTok is helping you reach the right people. The 2024 shutdown order did not become a ban on Canadians using the app, and the 2026 review now permits TikTok Canada’s investment to proceed under conditions.
But the two-year dispute is still useful evidence of platform risk. A creator can lose reach, access, monetization options or continuity because of decisions made by a platform, regulator or market that are outside the creator’s control.
Platform Asset → What TikTok Controls → What You Control
| Asset | TikTok controls | You control |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | Recommendation and distribution systems | Creative quality, testing and what you publish |
| Followers | Platform access and account rules | Whether followers have another route to you |
| Video archive | Availability inside the platform | Master files and backups |
| Audience relationship | How communication works inside TikTok | Your site, email list, community and direct contact paths |
| Monetization | Platform programs, eligibility and rule changes | Your broader revenue model and owned offers |
| Brand identity | How your profile appears inside TikTok | Your domain, site, positioning and creator home |
What creators should do now
Keep using TikTok if it earns attention, but make every strong signal useful beyond the app. Save your masters. Keep your profile and links current. Give interested people a clear route to a site, newsletter, community or creator home. If one format starts working, use the signal to decide what to make next rather than simply posting more of the same.

Build a creator home, not just a social profile
A social account is rented distribution. Your creator home is the place where your identity, work and next steps remain understandable even if a platform changes. If that layer is missing, continue to Find Your Brand or use the Free Creator Academy for the wider creator-development path.
TikTok Canada survived the shutdown order. Platform concentration is still a risk.
Use TikTok where it works. Build somewhere else that keeps working if TikTok changes.
The Canadian regulatory status in this article was checked against official Government of Canada and ISED sources. Platform and regulatory conditions can change, so re-check official sources when making a major business decision.
Prepare the release
A release should be supported by proof, not guesswork.
Organize the song, rights record, presentation and first audience pathway before you distribute.
