Why this milestone follows file preparation

Milestone 14 established what files and metadata exist. Milestone 15 decides who controls those assets and where they may responsibly be used. Uploading first and sorting out rights later can create conflicting identifiers, exclusivity problems, duplicate listings and unclear ownership.

Separate the key decisions

Publishing identity

Author or pen name, publisher or imprint, account ownership, payment recipient and final decision authority.

Rights and permissions

Copyright ownership, contributor agreements, third-party text or images, AI contribution records and specialist-review needs.

Identifiers

ISBN ownership, platform-provided identifiers, edition-specific identifiers and the long-term control implications of each choice.

Distribution

Retailers, aggregators, libraries, wholesale, direct sales, territories, languages, formats and exclusivity conditions.

Build a rights map

Cover and interior assets Record Record Record Record Verified / conditional / hold

This Academy does not provide legal clearance. When ownership, contracts, permissions or territorial rights are uncertain, record the uncertainty and seek qualified advice.

Understand distribution control

Wide distribution, exclusive programmes and direct sales each create different trade-offs. The correct choice depends on the publication, reader, formats, territories, commercial goals and willingness to depend on one platform.

  • Record which edition goes to which destination.
  • Check whether an exclusivity term applies to a format, territory or time period.
  • Identify who owns the account and receives reporting and payment.
  • Preserve the ability to update, withdraw or replace an edition.
  • Do not assume every platform accepts every format or rights position.

Define the publisher-of-record decision

The publisher or imprint named in public metadata should match the author’s actual publishing arrangement. A pen name, imprint and legal payment identity can be different, but their roles must be documented rather than blurred.

Responsible AI use

AI may organize supplied contracts, compare distribution options or identify questions to verify. It must not interpret a contract as legal advice, invent ownership, approve permissions or state that a platform’s current terms have been satisfied without current evidence.

Bounded prompt: Using only the supplied rights records, agreements and distribution terms, organize the decisions, identify missing evidence and flag possible conflicts. Quote no more than necessary, separate facts from questions and do not provide legal clearance.

Milestone 15 completion standard

  • Publishing account and decision authority are documented.
  • Author, pen name, publisher and imprint roles are clear.
  • Every edition has an identifier decision.
  • Core rights and third-party permissions are mapped.
  • Distribution destinations and territories are defined.
  • Exclusivity and direct-sales effects are understood.
  • Uncertainties and specialist-review needs are visible.
  • A final publishing-rights and distribution decision record exists.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an imprint?

No. Use one only when it has a clear publishing role and can be represented accurately.

Does a free ISBN mean I do not own my copyright?

ISBN assignment and copyright ownership are different questions. Record both separately.

Should I publish exclusively or wide?

There is no universal answer. Compare the actual terms, reader access and control implications.

Can I sell directly as well as through retailers?

Often, but confirm that no exclusivity or distribution agreement restricts the intended edition.

Can AI review my contracts?

It may organize supplied language, but it cannot replace qualified legal interpretation.

What is the main deliverable?

A Publishing Rights and Distribution Decision Record.
