Write the Book You Designed—Without Losing Your Voice.
A strong blueprint gives the manuscript direction. SP04 turns that structure into actual prose while keeping the reader promise, voice, sources, continuity, and author judgment visible.
This stage is not about producing the most words. It is about producing a controlled draft that can later be judged as a complete book.
Before you draft
Bring forward your SP02 Reader & Market Positioning Record and your SP03 Book Architecture Blueprint. If the architecture is still materially unresolved, return to SP03 rather than asking fluent prose—or AI—to hide the problem.
1. Set the drafting contract
Decide the manuscript-level controls that should stay stable unless the creative direction changes: point of view, tense, narrative distance, tone, vocabulary, sentence rhythm, dialogue approach, explanation level, terminology, accessibility, and the kinds of prose you specifically do not want.
Then save a few short passages written or approved by the author as voice anchors. Use them to detect drift. Do not mechanically imitate them.

2. Draft by unit, not by word count
For every chapter, scene, lesson, section, spread, or other structural unit, carry forward the job assigned in SP03:
- What must change for the reader here?
- What story, argument, or learning job must this unit accomplish?
- What inputs, facts, memories, research, or setup does it require?
- What must remain unresolved rather than invented?
- How does the unit enter, pay off, and hand the reader forward?
A 3,000-word chapter that does not perform its job is not stronger than a 1,500-word chapter that does.
3. Use the correct writing branch
Control scene purpose, POV, desire, resistance, change, revelation, character continuity, world rules, dialogue, tension, and pacing.
Advance a clear claim or question, support it appropriately, keep uncertainty visible, use concrete examples, and move the reader’s understanding forward.
Separate memory from documentation, interpretation from fact, and known material from gaps. Do not invent dialogue, actions, motives, or certainty to make a scene read better.
Move from explanation to example to practice to diagnosis to improvement to a usable artifact or transfer test.
Control age fit, read-aloud rhythm, page/spread text, text-image division of labor, word density, page turns, visual continuity, and art dependencies.
Make the form legible. Every component should have a reason to exist and a clear relationship to the reader journey.
4. Let AI assist the work—not replace the missing truth
AI can help brainstorm alternatives, organize supplied material, test weak logic, generate revision options, summarize material provided for that purpose, and identify repetition or possible continuity conflicts. The author still owns the decisions.
Do not let AI silently fill unresolved facts, memories, quotations, permissions, real-person motives, or source gaps. Mark the gap and keep moving where possible.
5. Keep continuity and provenance while you write
Long manuscripts create memory problems. Maintain a simple continuity/canon/terminology record for recurring names, dates, relationships, world rules, framework terms, measurements, claims, and other facts that must remain consistent.
Also record material AI-assisted operations that affect authorship or provenance. This does not need to become bureaucratic theater. It needs to be sufficient to reconstruct how important material was created and reviewed.

6. Revise the draft without pretending development is finished
Inside SP04, revise for unit purpose, specificity, voice, clarity, compression, continuity, obvious source flags, and transitions. If the manuscript reveals a broken book-level structure—wrong order, missing major section, weak arc, collapsed argument, chronology problem, or reader-promise failure—reopen SP03 and record the change.
SP05 is different. That is where the manuscript is read and diagnosed as a whole book. SP04 prepares a draft strong and controlled enough for that judgment.

SP04 readiness gate
You are ready for SP05 when the manuscript is complete enough to be judged as a book—not merely admired as individual passages.
- The current draft still honors the SP02 reader promise.
- The current SP03 architecture version is recorded.
- Every intended major unit exists or is explicitly marked as a known gap.
- The voice/POV/stance is stable enough to evaluate across the manuscript.
- Known source, memory, interview, continuity, and AI-provenance issues remain visible.
- Major architecture changes discovered during drafting have been reconciled.
- The draft can be read beginning to end without pretending placeholders are finished prose.
The SP04 completion artifact
Maintain a Manuscript Drafting Record: drafting contract, unit records, branch controls, continuity log, open blockers, revision passes, voice-drift checks, provenance notes, document state, and the SP05 handoff.
That record is what turns “I wrote a lot” into “I can explain the state of this manuscript.”
