David’s Final Years: Census, Araunah, Adonijah, Bathsheba & the Road to Solomon
The end of David’s reign moves through another national crisis, the Araunah threshing floor and a succession struggle that puts Solomon on the throne.
Second Samuel does not end with David in uncomplicated triumph
The closing chapters collect further conflict, songs, warrior traditions and a census crisis. In 2 Samuel 24, David orders a census despite Joab’s objection. Afterward David recognizes that he has sinned, and the story connects the act to national judgment through a plague.
The exact theological logic is difficult, especially because 2 Samuel 24 attributes the incitement to the LORD while the later parallel in 1 Chronicles 21 attributes it to an adversary/Satan. The difference should be acknowledged rather than erased.
Araunah’s threshing floor
As the plague stops near Jerusalem, David is instructed to build an altar on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. David refuses to offer to God a sacrifice that costs him nothing and buys the site.
Chronicles later connects this location with the future temple site. That later connection makes the episode an important bridge from David, who is not the temple builder, to Solomon, who will be.
Who will succeed David?
First Kings opens with David old and physically diminished. Adonijah, another son of David, exalts himself and gathers support, including Joab and Abiathar. Nathan and Bathsheba intervene, reminding David of the commitment that Solomon should reign.
David orders Solomon publicly installed. The succession is therefore not portrayed as a frictionless handoff. It is political, contested and dependent on alliances inside the royal court.
Bathsheba’s role changes
The woman first brought into David’s story through the king’s abuse of power in 2 Samuel 11 is not absent at the end. Bathsheba becomes an active participant in securing Solomon’s succession. Reading her whole arc prevents her from being frozen forever in the rooftop scene.
David’s legacy continues—but David’s story closes
David dies after a reign that the biblical tradition remembers as foundational. The dynasty continues through Solomon, carrying the promise of 2 Samuel 7 into a new stage. But the unresolved questions remain: wealth, wives, succession, temple, centralized power and whether the next king will govern with wisdom rather than simply inherit authority.
Next authority milestone: Solomon. The dedicated Solomon hub should remain unlinked until it exists.
