JSON can still be useful in an AI-music workflow—but not for the reason older Suno prompting advice sometimes claimed. The value of JSON is that it can help you and GPT organize creative decisions. Suno's documented creation workflow uses text-based fields such as Styles, Lyrics and Advanced options.
Fast answer: Do not assume Suno natively interprets JSON as a special precision language. Use JSON upstream as a structured creative brief, then convert it into clear natural-language instructions for the Suno fields that actually control the generation.
Does Suno understand JSON prompts?
Suno's current documentation describes Custom Mode around Lyrics, Styles, Advanced options and other creation controls. It also explicitly supports detailed conversational style instructions. It does not document JSON as a native prompting syntax that Suno interprets more accurately than normal language.
That distinction matters. A block that looks structured to a human is not automatically a privileged control format for the model.
If JSON has been working for you, the useful part may be the discipline of separating decisions—genre, instrumentation, vocal character, energy arc and exclusions—not the curly brackets themselves.
Where JSON is genuinely useful
JSON is excellent as a planning scaffold before you open Suno. It forces vague ideas into named decisions, and it gives GPT a consistent format to inspect, challenge and convert.

This is not a magic Suno format. It is a decision record. That is why it is useful.
Convert the brief into Suno's actual working fields
1. Styles: convert the decisions into readable musical direction
Take the strongest information from the planning brief and turn it into natural language:
Modern roots reggae with deep dub bass, crisp live drums and dry skank guitar; weathered male baritone; sparse restrained verses, wider call-and-response chorus; bridge drops to bass and voice before the biggest final chorus.
Notice what disappeared: field names, quotation marks and brackets. The creative decisions stayed.
2. Lyrics: put structural context where it belongs
If the lyrics need section-level instructions, keep those instructions close to the section they affect. Current Suno guidance supports adding context in the Lyrics box when appropriate rather than forcing every instruction into one giant style prompt.
For example, a bridge instruction might communicate that the arrangement should thin out before the final return. Keep those cues concise enough that the actual lyric remains readable.
3. Advanced → Exclude: separate what you do not want
If the brief contains exclusions, move them into Suno's Exclude control instead of cluttering the positive style direction.

4. Style Influence: change adherence before rewriting everything
If the direction is clear but generations keep wandering, Suno's Creative Sliders include Style Influence, which adjusts how strongly the generation follows the style input. That can be a better first test than continuously expanding the prompt.

Step 1 — Build the decision brief
Write the song's genre family, foundation, vocal character, section contrast, energy arc and exclusions. JSON is optional; the point is separation of decisions.
Step 2 — Ask GPT to challenge it
Have GPT identify contradictions, overloaded instructions and decisions that are still too vague. Do not ask it to add more adjectives just to make the prompt longer.
Step 3 — Convert, do not copy
Ask for a clean natural-language Styles prompt, any short Lyrics-box structural cues, and a separate Exclude list. Then place each piece where it belongs in Suno.
Step 4 — Run a controlled test
Generate versions against the same brief. Change one meaningful variable at a time so you know what caused the improvement or failure.
Step 5 — Save the winning decisions
Keep the brief that produced the strongest result. The reusable asset is not the JSON syntax; it is the set of approved creative decisions.
