Build a Clear Song Brief Before Writing the Lyrics

The Song Before the Song · Part 6 of 7

Build a practical song brief that captures the purpose and emotional logic of your song without prematurely forcing verses, choruses or production choices.

Direct answer: Create a focused one-page song brief that protects the meaning, perspective, imagery and emotional direction before you write lyrics or use AI.

A song brief protects the song before the lyric exists

A song brief is a compact statement of the decisions you have already made. It does not write the song for you. It keeps the writing from drifting into generic language or a different emotional story.

It should be clear enough to guide you and open enough to allow discovery.

What a song brief is not

It is not a finished lyric, a production prompt, a biography or a list of random adjectives. “Emotional, cinematic, powerful” does not explain what the song means.

The brief should describe the human material before it describes the sound.

The seven-part song brief

1. Visible topic. 2. Deeper meaning. 3. Reason the song exists. 4. Speaker. 5. Intended listener. 6. Emotional movement. 7. The song’s primary job.

Write one or two sentences for each. Plain language is better than polished language.

Add the central contradiction

Write two truths that are both active in the song. Example: “I know leaving saved me, and I still miss the life we planned.”

This contradiction can shape verses, pre-chorus tension or the bridge without needing to be solved.

Add the image bank

Choose three to five details gathered from memory. For each, note what it represents and where it may appear.

Do not overload the brief with every memory. Select the images that support the same meaning.

Add the honesty boundary

Complete: “The song must not pretend that ____.” This may protect the work from false forgiveness, instant healing, villainizing another person or claiming certainty that you do not have.

This line is one of the most useful quality controls in the entire process.

Write the one-paragraph song summary

Bring the decisions together in five to seven sentences. Explain the story, speaker, listener, emotional movement and ending condition.

Do not write lyrics yet. This summary is the bridge between reflection and construction.

Write the anchor sentence

Complete: “This is a song about ____, but underneath it is really about ____.”

If the writing starts drifting, compare every major choice to this sentence.

Complete worked brief

Topic: An adult child misses a mother who called every Sunday. Meaning: Ordinary love was assumed to be permanent. Reason: To confess and remember. Speaker: Present-day adult child. Listener: The mother, with wider recognition for anyone who postponed an important call.

Movement: Avoidance toward gratitude mixed with regret. Job: Confess and honour. Contradiction: “I avoided the calls because I felt secure in your love; now that security is what hurts.” Images: Sunday ringtone, cooling coffee, empty chair. Boundary: The song must not pretend the regret is fully resolved.

Quality check

Is the brief specific? Do the speaker, listener, meaning and movement belong to the same song? Does it include evidence rather than only adjectives? Does it leave room for discovery?

If yes, you are ready to bring in AI or begin writing manually.

Copy-and-paste template

Topic: ____. Deeper meaning: ____. Reason: ____. Speaker: ____. Listener: ____. Contradiction: ____. Emotional movement: ____ toward ____. Song job: ____. Images: ____. The song must not pretend that ____. Anchor sentence: ____.
