Record, Clean, Tune & Mix Vocals in BandLab

A good vocal workflow starts before plugins. Capture the cleanest usable performance, preserve the raw take, solve recording problems at their source, then use BandLab’s cleanup, pitch and mixing tools only where they improve the song.

Use the smallest correction that works. Noise cleanup cannot fix weak delivery. AutoPitch cannot decide the intended melody. Compression cannot rescue a badly chosen take.

1. Prepare the recording

  • Use the quietest practical room.
  • Keep the microphone or phone position consistent.
  • Use headphones when backing-track bleed matters.
  • Set input level so loud phrases do not clip.
  • Record a short test before the full take.

A phone or basic microphone can still produce a useful result when the room, distance and performance are controlled.

2. Create and label the vocal track

Open the BandLab Studio project, create a Voice/Audio track, choose the correct input, and name the track by role: Lead Vocal, Harmony, Ad-lib, Spoken Intro or another clear purpose. Good naming matters once the project grows.

3. Record multiple complete takes

Record at least a few serious takes rather than trying to repair the first one indefinitely. Listen for pitch, timing, diction, emotional delivery, breath control and consistency. Preserve raw takes before destructive processing.

4. Choose the performance before cleanup

Pick the take that best serves the song. If one phrase fails, re-record or comp a better phrase when possible. Technical processing should follow performance selection, not replace it.

5. Clean the recording only where needed

BandLab’s current Voice Cleaner combines tools for background-noise removal, DeReverb and AutoEQ on eligible access. Use it when the performance is good but the recording environment is getting in the way.

  • Noise removal: reduce steady background noise without stripping the voice unnaturally.
  • DeReverb: reduce unwanted room reflections when they are distracting.
  • AutoEQ: use as a starting point, then judge whether the tonal result actually fits the singer and mix.

Always compare processed and unprocessed versions. If cleanup creates watery artifacts, harsh consonants or a thin voice, back off.

6. Edit timing and silence manually

Trim obvious dead space, distracting noises and badly timed entrances before stacking more processing. Use fades at edits when required and listen through transitions in context.

7. Use AutoPitch intentionally

When pitch correction is part of the sound or a performance needs modest help, set the correct song key and scale where the tool requires it. Then choose the amount and character by ear.

  • Subtle correction can tighten a performance.
  • Heavy correction can become an intentional effect.
  • The wrong key/scale can pull correct notes toward wrong notes.
  • If the melody itself is wrong, re-recording is often better than forcing it.

8. Build the manual vocal chain

After cleanup and pitch decisions, mix the vocal in context:

  1. Level: make the words audible without crushing the instrumental.
  2. EQ: remove unnecessary low rumble or harsh buildup only when you hear a reason.
  3. Compression: control excessive level swings while preserving expression.
  4. De-essing or high-frequency control: address painful sibilance when needed.
  5. Reverb/delay: create space without burying clarity.

9. Build layers with purpose

Double, harmony and ad-lib tracks should have jobs. Decide which words or sections need width, support or response. Avoid stacking layers merely because more sounds bigger.

10. Treat voice transformation separately

If BandLab offers a voice-transformation feature in your current workflow, treat it as a creative transformation—not cleanup. Use only voices and performances you are authorized to process, and do not treat technical capability as consent or identity clearance.

11. Place the vocal inside the mix

Once the vocal chain works, return to the whole song. Check masking against guitars, keys, synths and cymbals. Use arrangement, level, panning and selective EQ before reaching for extreme processing.

12. Vocal QA before export

  • No clipping in raw or processed track.
  • Best performance selected.
  • Cleanup does not create obvious artifacts.
  • Pitch correction follows the intended key/melody.
  • Lead remains intelligible across sections.
  • Breaths and edits sound intentional.
  • Effects support—not hide—the performance.
  • Raw take and processed version are both preserved.
  • Any voice use/permissions are documented.
Imported or generated vocal stem? The same listening principles apply, but do not pretend it was a human recording session. Preserve the source record, verify the rights/permissions of the vocal, and use cleanup or mixing only to solve identifiable production problems.
