Return From Exile & the Second Temple: Cyrus, Ezra, Nehemiah, Samaritans & the Road to Jesus

Babylon falls, but restoration does not recreate David’s kingdom. Judeans return under Persian rule, rebuild the Temple, elevate Torah and scribal authority, negotiate community boundaries and live beside related Israelite communities whose sacred center is Mount Gerizim. The world is moving toward Second Temple Judaism—but it is not yet the world of Jesus.

Evidence ladder
  1. TEXT: Ezra-Nehemiah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi and Esther.
  2. PERSIAN HISTORY: Achaemenid chronology and imperial administration.
  3. ARCHAEOLOGY: Cyrus Cylinder, Persian-period Jerusalem/Yehud and Mount Gerizim.
  4. COMPOSITION: literary dating debates clearly labeled.
  5. ACT III BRIDGE: Torah, Temple, Samaritans, Elijah expectation and diaspora become prerequisites for understanding Jesus.

Preserved existing companions

The existing Trump as King Cyrus? article remains a modern political/theological application. It should now link backward to the Cyrus source article during later QA rather than substitute for Cyrus history. The existing Zechariah / Daniel / Revelation imagery article likewise remains downstream from this Persian-period restoration context.

The governing question

What happens when a people gets its Temple back—but not its kingdom?

Persian-period restoration rebuilds institutions without ending imperial rule. That tension helps produce the world Act III will inherit.
