How to Make a Genre Flip With AI Music — Bardcore, Medieval Covers & Viral Remixes

One of the clearest social-media examples is Bardcore: modern popular songs rebuilt with medieval-style instrumentation and presentation. The format became more than a novelty. It helped create an entire TikTok content trend, with creators using the music as the soundtrack for medieval paintings, jokes and character bits.

Hips Don’t Lie — Bardcore / Medieval Style Cover
This is the video example we are discussing. In 2020, TikTok’s own Newsroom described Bardcore as modern popular songs performed in medieval styles and said the #MedievalTikTok format began with a medieval cover of Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie. Creators then paired the sound with medieval paintings, Green Screen and intentionally anachronistic jokes.

Do not listen only for “medieval instruments.” Listen for the deeper trick: a familiar musical identity is transported into a new world strongly enough that the contrast itself becomes entertaining.
Why genre flips are so shareable
A good genre flip gives the audience two rewards at once: recognition and surprise. The listener already understands the emotional or melodic shape, but the new production creates a second layer of meaning.
Recognition
The audience has something familiar to grab onto: a melodic contour, rhythmic shape, emotional role, lyrical idea or cultural reference.
Transformation
The musical home changes dramatically: instruments, groove, vocal character, tempo feel, harmony, arrangement or production language.
Social payoff
The contrast creates an obvious visual or comedic world people can build posts around.
Bardcore was not merely “play pop songs on a lute.” The successful versions created a complete alternate musical universe. That is the lesson worth carrying into AI music.
The Genre Flip Formula
For original work, your “source idea” can be your own song, your own hook, a public-domain composition, or simply a familiar musical function you want to reinterpret. If you are studying an existing copyrighted song, treat it as analysis unless you have the rights needed for the use you plan.
Decision 1: What must stay recognizable?
Do not try to preserve everything. Choose the anchor: melodic shape, emotional job, hook rhythm, section structure, lyrical concept, or another defining feature you own or are permitted to use.
Decision 2: What is the new musical home?
Define it with musical language, not just a label. “Medieval” becomes more useful when translated into instrumentation, rhythm, space and performance behaviour.

Decision 3: Where is the contrast?
Finish this sentence: “The audience expects ___, but instead hears ___.” If you cannot answer that clearly, the flip may not be strong enough yet.
Decision 4: What is the social world?
Bardcore became bigger because the soundtrack suggested an immediate visual world. Ask what people could dress as, animate, joke about, reenact or visually transform when they hear your version.
Do not prompt “make this song medieval”
That may produce something entertaining, but it gives you almost no control. Build the direction from variables you can diagnose later.
Weak direction
Weak because it depends almost entirely on the source reference and does not tell you what to change when the result misses.
Better transferable direction

Run three controlled versions
Do not regenerate the whole idea blindly. Keep the concept stable and learn which variable creates the effect.
- Version A — Baseline: full direction as written.
- Version B — Instrument-world test: change only the historical / genre palette. For example, more plucked strings and drones versus more flute and hand percussion.
- Version C — Groove / arrangement test: keep the strongest palette and change movement: more bounce, stronger hook lift, sparser opening, more call-and-response.
Check your result
Is there a clear musical identity, or did the idea become generic?
Does the new genre feel coherent rather than like random instruments pasted on top?
Can a listener understand the flip within a few seconds?
Does the strongest section make you want to hear it again?
Can you imagine the social video concept immediately?
Fix the failed variable — not the whole song
“It just sounds like generic folk.”
Likely problem: the musical-home definition is too broad. Add more specific instrumentation, modal colour, groove and production boundaries.
“The instruments changed, but the feeling didn’t.”
Likely problem: arrangement behaviour stayed modern. Change phrasing, percussion, space and section movement.
“The flip is clever but not catchy.”
Likely problem: concept is overpowering songwriting. Improve hook and rhythm without adding more novelty.
“It sounds historical but not social.”
Likely problem: no short-form payoff. Design a 15–30 second moment with an obvious reveal, chorus lift or visual cue.

Genre is not the same thing as permission
A genre flip can change instrumentation, production and presentation dramatically while still using protected composition, lyrics, recording or voice elements. If you are working from somebody else’s song, the fact that the result is funny, noncommercial or heavily transformed does not automatically settle the rights question.
