Normalize AI Music in Audacity: Peak vs Loudness Normalization
Normalization is useful when you know which problem you are solving. Peak Normalize and Loudness Normalization do different jobs, and neither one replaces compression, limiting, mixing or mastering.
Arrive with the exact mix/version you intend to evaluate—preferably the approved version from #60. Identify the delivery job and the metric that actually matters, choose the smallest appropriate process, compare before and after, and complete a Loudness Decision Record v1 with one route: NO NORMALIZATION / PEAK NORMALIZE / LOUDNESS NORMALIZE / ROUTE TO DYNAMICS / ROUTE TO MIX / ROUTE TO MASTERING.
Use Normalize when you need to set a peak level or correct DC offset. Use Loudness Normalization when you need to move audio toward a deliberate perceived-loudness target in LUFS—or, when appropriate, an RMS target. Do not normalize automatically just because it is the first step in an old checklist.
What normalization actually does
Audacity 4 includes two different normalization effects under Effect → Volume and Compression. They both change gain, but they measure the audio differently.
Peak Normalize
Audacity's Normalize effect looks at the highest peak and changes the level so that peak reaches the value you choose. It can also remove DC offset.
Think: “Where should the highest sample peak sit?”
Loudness Normalization
Loudness Normalization can work from Perceived loudness in LUFS or RMS level in dB. It applies one gain change based on the selected measurement rather than only the highest peak.
Think: “What measured overall level does this delivery job require?”
Normalization changes overall gain. It does not automatically reduce the difference between loud and quiet sections. That is closer to the job of compression.
Know which number you are looking at
Sample peak / dBFS
The highest digital sample level in the file. It tells you where the largest stored sample sits relative to digital full scale. It does not tell you how loud the whole song feels.
LUFS
A loudness measurement designed to better represent perceived program loudness over time. Use it when the delivery job or comparison actually calls for a loudness-based target.
RMS
An average signal-energy style measurement. It can be useful when a workflow explicitly uses RMS, but it is not interchangeable with LUFS and should not be treated as a universal human-loudness measure.
True-peak specification
True peak estimates peaks that can occur between stored digital samples during reconstruction. A delivery specification that names true peak is not automatically satisfied just because Peak Normalize shows a sample-peak ceiling. Verify that requirement with an appropriate true-peak meter or delivery workflow.
Do not convert one metric into another by intuition. Peak, LUFS, RMS and true peak answer different questions. Start with the requirement, then choose the measurement and process that actually owns it.
Peak Normalize vs Loudness Normalize

Audacity 4 normalization defaults: know them, do not worship them
Normalize
Factory peak target: -1.0 dB.
Remove DC offset: on by default.
Independent stereo normalization: use only when you intentionally want left and right measured separately.
Loudness Normalization — perceived loudness
Default: -23 LUFS.
This reflects the EBU R128 broadcast target and is a reasonable spoken-word broadcast default. It is not a universal JR music-mastering or streaming target.
Loudness Normalization — RMS
Default: -20 dB RMS.
This is an interface default for RMS mode, not a recommendation that every AI-generated song should be normalized there.
Mono handling
In perceived-loudness mode, Treat mono as dual mono (recommended) is on by default. It measures a mono track as it will effectively be heard when reproduced through two channels.
Audacity leaves Normalize stereo channels independently off by default. Keep it off for ordinary stereo music unless the left and right channels genuinely need separate correction. Independent normalization changes stereo balance.
The JR target-selection gate
- Name the delivery job. Streaming release, video, podcast, social clip, demo, client handoff and archive can have different requirements.
- Find the actual requirement. If a distributor, client or platform gives a technical specification, use the current specification rather than a remembered number.
- Name the metric. Does the requirement actually say peak, LUFS, RMS or true peak? Do not substitute another measurement because it is easier to find.
- Confirm the mix already works. If vocals, bass, tone, dynamics or arrangement are wrong, route backward instead of polishing the wrong version.
- Choose the smallest process that owns the problem. Uniform gain change for normalization; dynamic control for compression/limiting; broader final decisions for mastering.
- Compare fairly. Listen before and after at a sensible matched-feeling playback level so “louder” does not automatically win.
- Stop or route. If meeting the target requires damaging the mix or changing dynamics, do not keep normalizing. Route to the correct layer.
How to Peak Normalize AI Music in Audacity 4
This is useful when your file is already balanced and you specifically want to set its peak level.
Import the file
Open the WAV or other audio file you are working with. This can be an export from Suno, ElevenLabs, Musicfy or another music-generation workflow.
Select the audio
Use Ctrl + A on Windows or Cmd + A on Mac if you want to process the complete track.
Open Normalize
Go to Effect → Volume and Compression → Normalize.
Choose the settings for the job
Audacity 4's current default maximum-amplitude target is -1.0 dB. That gives modest peak headroom, but it remains an interface default—not a universal mastering standard. The option to remove DC offset is on by default.
For an already balanced stereo music mix, generally leave Normalize stereo channels independently disabled so you do not unnecessarily alter the left/right relationship.
Apply, listen and compare
Do not judge the result only because it is louder. Compare at similar listening volume and confirm that the change actually served the purpose you intended.
How to use Loudness Normalization
Loudness Normalization is more relevant when the job specifies overall loudness rather than a peak ceiling.
- Select the audio you want to process.
- Open Effect → Volume and Compression → Loudness Normalization. The Audacity 4 dialog is headed Normalize loudness.
- Choose Perceived loudness for LUFS or RMS when the job genuinely uses an RMS target.
- Enter the target that fits the delivery or production requirement rather than accepting a default blindly.
- Apply the effect and compare the result against the unprocessed version at a sensible matched listening level.
The current Audacity 4 defaults are -23 LUFS in perceived-loudness mode and -20 dB in RMS mode. Audacity identifies -23 LUFS with the EBU R128 broadcast target. That does not make it the correct target for every song, distributor or streaming service.
Loudness normalization usually belongs near the final delivery stage, after repair, arrangement and mix decisions. The Audacity control is a level tool—not a mastering preset and not a shortcut around finishing the song.
Time-stretched clips need one extra check in Audacity 4
Audacity 4's clip workflow allows nondestructive time stretching. Its Normalize documentation notes that applying an effect to a time-stretched clip renders the changed speed into the processed audio. If you apply an effect to only part of a time-stretched clip, Audacity can split the clip so the selected region is rendered.
If you changed tempo or clip speed earlier, preserve the project and verify clip boundaries and alignment after normalization—especially when processing only a selection. For the current timing workflow, use the Audacity 4 Tempo, Speed & Pitch guide.
Should you normalize before click removal?
Not as a universal rule. The older version of this guide recommended normalization first because it supposedly made clicks and pops easier to hear. You do not need to make a destructive gain change just to monitor a click more clearly—turn up your playback level instead.
There are exceptions. If a file has a real DC-offset problem, correcting that early can make sense. But if the problem is a click, pop, bad edit, weak section, noisy stem or poor balance, repair that problem first.

A better workflow for AI-generated music
Diagnose the problem
Name the biggest reason the track is not ready. Do not reach for Normalize because it is familiar.
Repair the earliest-stage problem first
Fix lyrics, sections, clicks, obvious noise, timing or stem balance before final loudness work.
Mix before final delivery processing
Get the relationship between vocals, bass, drums and other elements working before you chase a number.
Normalize only when it has a purpose
Peak Normalize for a peak-based task. Loudness Normalization for a LUFS- or RMS-based task.
Master the version you are actually releasing
Final loudness and limiting decisions belong at the end of the workflow, after the song and mix are working.

Do not normalize because a checklist told you to.
Choose the process that matches the problem. If the song itself is wrong, edit it. If the mix is wrong, mix it. If the peak needs a known ceiling, normalize it. If you need a loudness target, choose the measurement and target deliberately. Then master the version that earned its way to the finish line.
