Uber and Uber Eats British Columbia driver requirements 2026 cover showing eligibility, documents, approval steps and delivery options

Uber & Uber Eats Driver Requirements in British Columbia in 2026

British Columbia Uber requirements • reviewed October 21, 2026

In Vancouver and other eligible B.C. markets, passenger rides and Uber Eats delivery are different businesses. Passenger driving requires a qualifying commercial driver's licence, screening and a compliant inspected car. Delivery has a separate, often simpler entry path.

1. Want to drive passengers? You need a commercial licence

For passenger ride-hail work in B.C., Uber's Vancouver onboarding lists age 21 or older and a valid B.C. Class 1, 2 or 4 driver's licence. Class 5 is not accepted for Uber passenger rides.

  • The provincial licensing route can involve a commercial knowledge test, a road test and a medical exam for Class 4.
  • Uber asks for proof you can legally work in Canada and a suitable B.C. driver's licence.
  • You will also need a suitable vehicle, registration, insurance and successful screening before being activated.

Start with B.C.'s passenger-directed vehicle driver requirements and Uber's Vancouver onboarding checklist.

2. Screening: ICBC record, police check and RCC

Passenger-driving applicants in B.C. must satisfy the provincial driving and police-record checks. Uber's Vancouver process includes an ICBC Commercial Driving Record (N-Print) and a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector (PIC-VS) to support issuing a Record Check Certificate (RCC).

Important change effective September 1, 2026: Uber says the N-Print and PIC-VS generally must have been issued within the preceding three months for an RCC to be issued. Having an old check in your records may not be enough.

Uber says the RCC can remain valid for up to two years, expiring on a birth-date-based schedule, subject to the documentation rules for renewal. Check your individual approval status in the Driver app.

3. Vancouver vehicle and inspection checklist

Uber currently lists the following baseline for passenger-driving vehicles in Vancouver:

  • Four doors and at least five seats, good condition and no commercial branding.
  • Model year nine years or newer on Uber's current Vancouver vehicle page. Check this at the time of application because the eligible model years move over time.
  • No salvaged or rebuilt vehicle.
  • A commercial vehicle inspection at an authorized facility; upload the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Report within Uber's applicable window.
  • Keep registration, proof of insurance, required inspection documentation and any prescribed Uber decals while operating.

Official vehicle and document sources: Uber's Vancouver vehicle requirements and Vancouver driver documents and decals. Uber describes coverage arranged through ICBC for qualifying rideshare activities, but it is still important to verify your own insurance situation.

4. Uber Eats delivery is not Class 4 passenger rideshare

A Class 4 licence is part of the passenger-driving path, not a blanket requirement to deliver food. For Uber Eats in B.C., applicants must meet the requirements for their chosen mode (car, bike or another option supported in their city), work eligibility and background screening. Car delivery generally involves licence and insurance documents; bike delivery has different documents.

Vancouver and Victoria may have different supported methods and market conditions. Check eligibility within the city selection during the official Uber delivery application. Don't purchase an e-bike or vehicle based on assumptions about which modes operate in your area.

5. A straightforward B.C. signup plan

  1. Pick passenger rides or delivery first. Each has its own onboarding pathway; you may be able to qualify for both.
  2. Choose your real work city. Don't assume Vancouver requirements or available products are identical province-wide.
  3. Check your licence and car. For passenger driving, verify Class 1, 2 or 4, vehicle age and the commercial inspection.
  4. Prepare fresh documents. The September 2026 RCC document-age rule is especially important for B.C. passenger applicants.
  5. Review the actual offer during signup. Uber sets reward eligibility and the trip/delivery target for each account.
  6. Track real income after expenses. Vehicle upkeep, insurance, tax registration and hours online all matter.
