AI Music Case Study
“BBL Drizzy” matters less as proof that AI can make a viral song and more as proof that AI-generated audio can enter the same real-world chain of culture, sampling, credits and commercial release as any other piece of music.
Fast answer: why did BBL Drizzy matter?
In 2024, comedian and creator Will Hatcher—better known as King Willonius—wrote the joke concept and lyrics for “BBL Drizzy,” then used Udio to generate versions of the song. Metro Boomin later sampled the AI-generated recording in his own “BBL Drizzy” beat during the Drake–Kendrick Lamar feud. The sample then reached a commercial release when Drake rapped over it on Sexyy Red’s “U My Everything.”
That sequence made the track unusually useful as an AI-music case study. It connected human authorship, generative audio, curation, remix culture, sampling and rights clearance in one highly visible chain.
What actually happened
1. Human idea and lyrics. Hatcher built the joke around a live cultural moment and wrote the lyrics himself. Reporting from TIME and WIRED makes that human contribution clear.
2. AI generation and selection. He used Udio to generate the musical performance and worked through many versions rather than treating the first output as the finished work.
3. Metro Boomin sampled it. The producer turned the generated recording into a beat and invited the internet to rap over it, pushing the source material far beyond its original audience.
4. The sample entered a commercial release. Drake later used Metro Boomin’s “BBL Drizzy” material on Sexyy Red’s “U My Everything,” forcing the conversation beyond novelty and into practical credit and clearance questions.
The human work was not incidental
The lazy reading of this story is that somebody typed a prompt and accidentally made a hit. The more useful reading is almost the opposite. Hatcher supplied the joke, cultural timing, written lyrics, taste and selection. He also described the process as trial and error rather than one-click creation.
That distinction matters for creators because generative tools can produce abundance faster than they produce judgment. The valuable part of a workflow is often deciding what deserves to exist, what version deserves to survive, and why an audience would care about it right now.
Why Metro Boomin changed the story
Before Metro Boomin sampled it, “BBL Drizzy” could have remained an entertaining AI-assisted internet artifact. Sampling moved it into a different creative system. A major producer heard usable source material, transformed it, attached a participation challenge and gave thousands of creators a reason to build on top of it.
For AI music creators, that is a bigger lesson than virality. A generated recording can become source material. Once another creator samples, edits, performs over or commercially releases that material, the questions become familiar music-business questions: What exactly was used? Who contributed what? What permissions were needed? What credits were negotiated? Which parts may have independent human authorship?
The rights lesson is not “AI music is public domain”
Public reporting around the later clearance is unusually instructive. Hatcher’s legal representative told MusicRadar that they treated the AI-generated master differently from Hatcher’s human-written lyrics, which were credited. That is a description of how this specific situation was handled—not a universal rule that every AI-generated recording is automatically public domain or free for anyone to sample.
Creators should separate at least four questions: the human-written lyrics or composition, the generated audio recording, any uploaded or referenced source material, and the platform terms governing the generation. Those layers can have different rights, permissions and evidentiary histories.
Important: BBL Drizzy did not create a court rule saying AI songs are copyright-free. It became a visible example of how uncertain rights questions can collide with ordinary sampling and clearance practice.
Five creator lessons from BBL Drizzy
- Start with a reason for the song to exist. The cultural idea and timing gave the track relevance before the technology gave it sound.
- Generate broadly, curate narrowly. Multiple outputs are useful only when the creator develops enough taste to reject most of them.
- Know which contribution is yours. Lyrics, melody edits, performed audio, arrangement decisions, prompts, uploaded recordings and final edits should not be collapsed into one vague claim of “I made it.”
- Assume success creates more rights questions, not fewer. A private experiment is simple. A sample, remix, collaboration or commercial release can create a chain of permissions and credits.
- Keep records before you need them. Save original lyrics, prompts, generation dates, source files, edits, stems, collaborator permissions and platform information while the project is being made.
What BBL Drizzy did not prove
It did not prove that AI automatically makes songs viral. It did not prove that prompting alone guarantees copyright protection. It did not prove that generated audio can always be sampled without permission. And it did not prove that human creativity becomes less important when generation becomes easier.
If anything, the case points the other way. The technology generated the performance, but the part people remembered came from a human creator who understood the joke, found the angle, iterated until the result worked and released it into the exact cultural moment that could carry it.
