Build a deliberate BandLab mix from static balance, headroom, pan, EQ and dynamics, then use AutoMix as an optional comparison and automation only where the song needs movement.

BandLab Mixing Workflow: Manual Balance, AutoMix & Automation

Mixing is the job of making the tracks work together. Start with human listening decisions: gain, static balance, panning, arrangement space, EQ and dynamics. AutoMix can then become a useful comparison, while automation handles changes that need to happen over time.

Mix first. Master later. A mastering preset should not be asked to solve clipping, a buried vocal, an overloaded arrangement or unstable low end.

1. Prepare the session

  • Name tracks clearly.
  • Mute unused material instead of leaving mystery tracks active.
  • Preserve the original/imported source.
  • Set a repeatable reference section.
  • Keep enough level headroom that the mix is not clipping while you work.

2. Build the static balance

  1. Choose the central element—often lead vocal, drums or another focal source.
  2. Bring in rhythm and low-end elements.
  3. Add harmonic/supporting layers.
  4. Lower competing tracks before boosting everything else.
  5. Check the balance at low listening volume.

If the song feels balanced before EQ and effects, later decisions become much easier.

3. Use panning to create space

Keep critical low-frequency and lead elements stable unless the production calls for another choice. Move supporting elements only when panning improves clarity, width or musical intent. Extreme movement should be a deliberate effect, not a substitute for arrangement.

4. Use EQ as problem solving

Listen for masking and unnecessary buildup. Cut only where you hear a reason. If two important parts occupy the same space, first ask whether arrangement, octave, performance or level can solve the collision before carving both aggressively.

5. Use compression and effects deliberately

Compression controls dynamic range; reverb/delay create space; saturation and other effects change tone. Add each because the mix needs a specific result. Bypass often so your ear does not confuse louder or more processed with better.

6. Compare AutoMix against your manual baseline

BandLab’s current AutoMix is an eligible Membership feature that creates an AI-assisted first-pass balance by adjusting level and panning according to the selected context/genre. Save your manual baseline, run AutoMix, then compare.

Listen for:
  • lead/vocal placement
  • kick and bass relationship
  • width and center stability
  • whether supporting layers became too loud
  • whether an intentional imbalance was flattened
  • whether the result simply became louder rather than clearer

Keep AutoMix only when it gives you a better starting point. It is not the final authority.

7. Automate only after the static mix works

Automation is time-based control. Use it when a correct static setting cannot solve the whole song.

  • Volume: rides, fades, section balance, phrase support.
  • Pan: deliberate movement or section-specific positioning.
  • FX: throws, builds, transition changes and supported parameter movement.

Use as few automation points as necessary. Dense automation is harder to understand and easier to break.

8. Use a controlled correction loop

  1. Mark the exact timestamp of the problem.
  2. Name the smallest parameter that can solve it.
  3. Change that parameter only.
  4. Listen several bars before and after the change.
  5. Bypass/reset and compare.
  6. Keep it only if the whole song improves.

9. Reference the mix

Check the song at low volume, on headphones and on at least one ordinary consumer playback system. Compare against a relevant reference track for broad balance and translation, not for exact loudness matching.

10. Pre-master QA

  • No audible clipping.
  • Lead elements remain clear in every section.
  • Kick/bass relationship is controlled.
  • Panning is intentional.
  • EQ/effects solve identifiable problems.
  • Automation transitions are smooth.
  • Beginning and ending are clean.
  • An unmastered mix is saved and clearly named.

11. Master only after the mix passes

Once the static balance and time-based changes work together, move to final mastering. Preserve the unmastered file so you can return if mastering exposes a mix problem.
