Turkish makam is a melodic path, not a scale preset

A makam is identified through relationships among characteristic pitches, melodic development, important resting points and cadences, intonation, and repertoire practice. A list of notes is not enough. For AI-assisted work, your job is to direct the musical relationships and document where a model cannot reproduce them faithfully.

1. Start with a real reference context

Select one specific makam and two or three coherent references from the same repertoire or performance context. Do not begin with a generic “Turkish” or “Middle Eastern” sound request.

2. Map the seyir

Seyir is the characteristic melodic course. Record the tonic/final, important secondary pitch areas, typical direction of movement, characteristic phrases, resting points and return behavior. Ask: where does the melody begin, where does it gather tension, where can it rest, and how does it resolve?

3. Treat pitch and intonation as a control problem

Turkish makam theory uses interval distinctions that do not map cleanly onto ordinary twelve-tone equal temperament. Use reference listening and theory together. If your tool flattens microtonal relationships, record that as a model limitation instead of hiding the problem with stereotyped instrumentation.

4. Add usul only when the reference calls for it

Usul is the rhythmic-cycle system used in much Turkish art-music repertoire. Identify the cycle, accent logic and phrase relationship rather than reducing it to BPM. Improvisatory or freer passages may require a different rhythmic treatment.

5. Define form, foreground and ornament

Note the musical form or section job, lead voice/instrument, supporting roles, articulation and ornamentation. Named forms such as peşrev, saz semaisi, şarkı and taksim are treated here as form/reference lanes, not extra genre counts.

Boundary check

Turkish makam and Arabic maqam are historically related modal traditions, but they are not interchangeable systems. Their terminology, intonation frameworks, melodic conventions, rhythmic systems and repertoires require separate reference control. Persian dastgah is also reserved as a separate system.

Controlled A/B test

Create two executions while changing only one major variable. Keep the makam pathway protected. Compare the seyir, cadence behavior, pitch treatment, rhythm/form relationship and foreground. Diagnose one failure and make one bounded revision.

Success criteria

You are complete when you can explain the chosen makam as a route rather than a scale, identify what survived or failed in the generation, document any tuning limitation, and make a targeted revision without piling on generic regional cues.
