Simon Watson Is Building SongSyntax to Give AI Music Prompts Real Musical Structure

Most AI music prompt advice tells creators to add more descriptive words. Simon Watson is working on a different problem: how to translate an idea into musical structure before the first generation begins.

Developing Creator Spotlight: This is the first article in an ongoing look at Simon Watson and SongSyntax. It reflects the project’s current soft-release stage and will be expanded as I test SongSyntax 101, continue my conversations with Simon and follow the system’s development.

This one begins earlier.

Simon Watson is still developing SongSyntax, a collection of structured prompt systems intended to help AI music creators move from a general creative idea toward clearer musical instructions for tools such as Suno.

I have reviewed the public SongSyntax material, listened to several early demonstration tracks Simon shared with me and begun examining how the system could fit inside a more deliberate AI music workflow. I have not yet completed a full hands-on evaluation of SongSyntax 101. That is part of what comes next.

The question is not whether SongSyntax can replace the creator. The useful question is whether it can help the creator make better decisions before generation begins.

The problem SongSyntax is trying to solve

Many creators know the feeling they want, the genre they have in mind and perhaps even the story the song should tell. What they do not always know is how to translate that vision into instructions a music generator can use consistently.

A longer prompt does not automatically become a more musical prompt. It can still contain conflicting genres, too many instruments, no section hierarchy, no rhythmic logic and no distinction between the sound that should lead and the influence that should remain secondary.

SongSyntax is being built around that translation gap. Its public site positions the system as a prompt-development layer rather than a music generator. The intended output is an editable starting point that the creator can revise before using it in Suno or a comparable text-based music system.

That distinction matters. A useful prompt tool should not simply repeat the user’s description in more polished language. It should surface musical decisions the creator may not yet have made.

More than one universal prompt box

The public SongSyntax material shows an unusually broad set of genre and historical directions. The project is not treating every style as a variation of one generic pop workflow.

Chart and era-based music

Systems explore changing song forms and production expectations across decades rather than treating “retro” as a single sound.

Country roots and subgenres

The approach recognizes that country music changes through period, instrumentation, regional tradition and songwriting convention.

Sacred and devotional music

Public descriptions include controls connected to vocal format, accompaniment, occasion, ensemble and historical lens.

Classical and Baroque structures

Instrumental directions address form, period orchestration, movement, texture and the behaviour of specific instrumental roles.

Synth-pop and synthwave

The tools attempt to distinguish production era, arrangement and instrumental behaviour instead of relying only on familiar genre labels.

Genre fusion

The system explores which genre should lead and which should modify the result, helping avoid a random collision of incompatible traits.

This genre-specific approach is one of the strongest reasons SongSyntax caught my attention. AI music creators often receive broad advice about adding mood, tempo and instrumentation. Those elements matter, but genre credibility also depends on form, relationship, restraint and historical context.

SongSyntax 101: the developing entry point

In our correspondence, Simon described SongSyntax 101 as a broader entry point derived from lessons built into his more specialized tools. According to Simon, it can work from lyric or instrumental ideas, accept very little or much more detailed input and produce more developed instrumental structures than a generic [Instrumental] instruction.

He also emphasized that there is significant logic operating beneath the user-facing experience. That claim still needs to be tested through direct use, but it identifies the standard against which the system should be evaluated.

Current soft-release position

Simon indicated that users should be able to register and generate one song per day free during the current release stage. I have not yet independently confirmed the registration workflow or the exact access terms because the public link was not included in our exchange. This article will be updated once I have tested that experience directly.

The first demonstration tracks

Simon shared five private MP3 demonstrations intended to show the range of SongSyntax 101:

  • Right Now Feeling
  • Let a Little Sunshine In
  • Clicking Into Place
  • Allegro Furioso
  • Furia e Dissenso

My immediate response to Simon was direct: the songs were dynamite. The examples moved across contemporary song formats and more dramatic instrumental territory, which supported his claim that the system was being developed for more than one narrow genre lane.

That reaction is not the same as a complete review. The next evaluation needs to compare what the creator requests, what SongSyntax returns and what the music generator ultimately produces.

The demonstration tracks are named here as part of the development record, but they are not embedded or publicly distributed through this article. Any future audio inclusion will require Simon’s approval and a proper public source.

Why the “starting point” philosophy matters

SongSyntax’s public material does not present the system as an automatic route to a finished professional song. It describes the output as a substantial starting point that still requires creator review, revision, regeneration and decision-making.

That is the right philosophy.

A structured prompt system can help organize an idea, identify missing choices, translate intent into musical language and warn against incompatible directions. It should not decide which version deserves release, whether the song represents the creator honestly or whether the result is legally and commercially ready.

What a tool can support

Structure, terminology, options, prompt organization, exclusions and a stronger first draft.

What the creator must still own

Selection, rewriting, rejection, regeneration, arrangement, documentation, release judgment and final creative responsibility.

Human contribution before and after the prompt

One reason SongSyntax may fit the Jack Righteous audience is that a structured prompt process can leave a clearer record of human direction. That record may include the original concept, emotional goal, genre research, structural choices, instrument decisions, exclusions, prompt versions, generation comparisons and final edits.

That does not mean structured prompting automatically creates copyright protection. Copyright and other legal outcomes depend on jurisdiction, the final work and the nature of the human contribution. But a documented process is more useful than pretending the work appeared from nowhere.

The best use of AI is not to erase the creator’s decisions. It is to help the creator make those decisions more deliberately.

A responsible question after the song exists

SongSyntax’s public “What Next?” guidance also separates the project from many tools that treat generation as the finish line. It encourages creators to consider what they contributed, whether the result is genuinely ready, whether the title, artwork, voice or style could create confusion and whether prompt, lyric and version records were saved.

It also leaves room for a song to remain a private experiment, learning exercise or work in development rather than assuming every successful generation belongs on a distributor.

Better generation is valuable. Better release judgment may be even more important.

What still needs to be proven

This first article documents the direction and the reason the project is worth following. It is not a final product verdict.

What is established

The public website exists, specialized prompt directions are described, SongSyntax 101 is in a soft-release stage and Simon has shared demonstration music and development context directly with me.

What I still need to test

Registration, onboarding, prompt quality, minimal versus detailed input, instrumental structure, genre control, revision ease, repeatability and the practical value compared with building the same workflow directly in ChatGPT.

I also want to understand Simon’s background, what first led him to build the system, which tools are publicly usable now and how user feedback will shape the next version.

Following Simon and SongSyntax as the work develops

This article is intentionally being published before the project’s story is finished. That allows it to become a transparent development record rather than a profile written only after every uncertainty has disappeared.

Future updates may include a full SongSyntax 101 walkthrough, prompt examples, generated results, before-and-after comparisons, instrumental tests, genre-specific evaluations, an interview with Simon, confirmed public access information and lessons from the system’s development.

The beginning, not the verdict

The future of AI music tools may not belong only to systems that generate more songs. It may also belong to systems that help people make better decisions before the first generation begins.

Simon Watson is building in that earlier part of the process. SongSyntax is attempting to turn an idea into a more musically informed starting point while still leaving the creator responsible for what happens next.

I want to use SongSyntax 101, compare its structured prompts with my existing workflows and understand how much meaningful control it gives the person directing the song.

As my conversations with Simon continue—and as SongSyntax moves beyond its current soft-release stage—this article will continue to grow with the project.
