Isaiah & Hezekiah: Faith, Empire, Political Alliances & the Assyrian Crisis

Isaiah speaks inside an age of empire

Isaiah is not writing abstract inspirational poetry detached from politics. Large portions of Isaiah 1–39 belong to the world of Assyrian expansion, threatened cities, royal alliances, fear and competing claims about where Judah’s security should come from.

Prophetic faith is not denial that armies exist

Isaiah repeatedly criticizes reliance on political and military arrangements that bypass covenant trust. Egypt becomes an especially important example in Isaiah’s anti-alliance rhetoric. That does not mean foreign policy itself is inherently sinful. The prophetic critique concerns the deeper substitution of imperial calculation for justice, faithfulness and trust in YHWH.

The Rabshakeh understands the propaganda battle

In 2 Kings 18 and Isaiah 36, the Assyrian spokesman does more than threaten violence. He attacks Hezekiah’s credibility, mocks Egypt, challenges confidence in YHWH and even claims divine authorization for Assyria’s campaign. He speaks publicly in Judean so ordinary people can hear. Empire is using language as a weapon alongside siege power.

Isaiah contests the empire’s interpretation

The prophetic response does not deny Assyria’s strength. It denies Assyria’s right to interpret strength as ultimate sovereignty. Isaiah can portray Assyria as an instrument of judgment and still condemn Assyrian arrogance. That tension is vital: being used within a larger divine purpose does not make an empire morally righteous.

Why this matters on the road to Jesus

Isaiah’s Assyrian-era language later becomes part of Jewish and Christian messianic interpretation. Responsible Act III work will need to return to these passages with their original historical pressure intact. We should not jump directly from Isaiah to Jesus as though eighth-century Judah never existed.
