Driving Uber on Thanksgiving Weekend: Passenger Rides vs Uber Eats

Canadian Thanksgiving brought a useful decision for eligible Uber earners: passenger rides, restaurant delivery or grocery shopping requests? They are not interchangeable. The 2026 holiday is now over, but the comparison can help you review what worked and choose a more practical path for future holiday weekends.

1. Three kinds of Uber work to compare
Passenger rides
Eligible rideshare drivers transport people to and from gatherings, hotels, airports or events. The demand pattern differs from restaurant orders.
Watch: Legal pickup zones, insurance and inspection costs, congestion, longer passenger trips and unpaid return kilometres.
Uber Eats restaurant delivery
Eligible couriers pick up prepared meals from participating restaurants and deliver them to customers. Hours of operation and preparation times can change on holidays.
Watch: Merchant closures, food-preparation delays, parking, apartment access and whether the delivery ends near other restaurants.
Shop & Deliver grocery requests
Eligible couriers can opt in to shop for customer items, pay using an approved method and deliver those items.
Watch: Substitutions, checkout, item availability, shopping time and the true time from acceptance to drop-off.

2. You must qualify for the specific kind of work
Passenger driving has more restrictive local rules than ordinary food delivery. Uber's Canadian rideshare requirements include city-specific vehicle, screening, insurance and inspection standards. A car accepted for food delivery is not automatically eligible to carry passengers.
Shop & Deliver is an additional delivery request type, not a separate passenger service. Uber says eligible couriers can activate it in the Driver app; orders are labelled so you can distinguish them, and you can decline requests.

3. Compare the result, not one attractive fare
For each work type, estimate operating profit per total online hour: (gross fares, delivery pay and tips − estimated operating costs) ÷ total hours online. Keep sign-up incentives separate so they don't distort future expectations. This is an operating comparison, not a complete after-tax calculation.

4. What can you learn from Thanksgiving 2026?
The 2026 holiday ran Friday October 9 through Monday October 12. The following are questions to ask about your own shifts, not claims about measured nationwide trends:
- Friday: Were rider trips or restaurant requests better than a normal Friday, after pickup times and costs?
- Saturday: Did grocery requests make sense once you included shopping and checkout time?
- Sunday: Which neighbourhood had workable demand, and were roads or merchant waits a problem?
- Monday: Did holiday merchant hours or passenger travel change what you could complete?

5. Which Uber path should you start with?
- Choose passenger driving to investigate if you meet the full local rideshare requirements, have a suitable four-door car and want to transport people.
- Choose food delivery to investigate if the available transportation modes and simpler delivery onboarding fit your circumstances.
- Explore Shop & Deliver if you already qualify to deliver and are comfortable finding items, managing replacements and dealing with checkout.
- If eligible for both: compare actual net results and your preferred working conditions. There is no universal winner.
Future holidays can have different merchant hours, customer behaviour, local rules and Uber app offers. Don't base signup or vehicle purchases on one busy-looking evening.
