Not Theirs

What The Cave Kept

Prochain chapitre : I Keep The Light On

Les Chants du Silence: From the Memory of the Oceans to the Voice of Song

Jean-Luc Granier's project began by giving the elements a voice. Today, without leaving the sea, ice or memory behind, he is moving closer to something personal: the lyrics, images and traces that a song can carry.

Jean-Luc and I first connected in 2025. When he got back in touch this autumn, what caught my attention was not the use of Suno itself, but the development of his artistic direction: from the vulnerability of landscapes toward more personal stories about memory and identity.

As Les Chants du Silence, Jean-Luc has built an atmospheric musical world drawing on Nordic-leaning folk, alternative pop and cinematic arrangements. The Sentinel of the Ocean—an imagined figure listening to what the landscape might remember—remains part of that world. But Jean-Luc is clear about his direction now: he is concentrating more on songwriting and deeper lyrics.

From the reefs to the poles: where the project began

Jean-Luc points to two earlier chapters. With Le Chant du Récif, he sought to give the marine world a voice, in resonance with everyone who maintains and restores coral reefs around the world. With Le Chant des Pôles, his attention moved to the cryosphere and the environmental concerns associated with the Albedo Foundation.

These are references and inspirations in the artist's own account, not statements of a formal institutional partnership. More importantly, they explain the continuity in his imagery: fragile places, passing time and the things we may fail to hear before they disappear.

Where the project is going: the natural world provided its first vocabulary. Jean-Luc is now giving more space to words, identity and human emotion while retaining the symbolic imagery that helped define the music.

Two songs, two ways of approaching memory

Single · Released September 4, 2026

Not Theirs

Jean-Luc describes an image of a Virgin opening her eyes as a metaphor for reclaiming identity. At its heart is a direct question: who gets to decide who someone is?

What The Cave Kept

A handprint on stone. The suggestion of a life reduced to a trace. This song takes the project's concern with memory and gives it a human scale.

The images in these songs do more than decorate a lyric. They offer a way into the music: one song considers the recovery of identity, while the other wonders what survives the passage of time.

Next chapter: I Keep The Light On

The next chapter of that evolution is I Keep The Light On, which Jean-Luc plans to release on November 13, 2026. Ahead of the release, he has shared a making-of video, a Suno version and the official single artwork.

Keeping a light on

With a lighthouse facing the sea, the artwork carries forward the project's imagery of light, distance and remembrance. That is a reading of the visual, not a claim about the meaning of Jean-Luc's lyrics.

Jean-Luc has announced November 13, 2026 as the release date (upcoming as of publication).

Where Suno fits: human direction, AI-assisted production

Jean-Luc provided an important clarification about his process: he writes the lyrics, prepares the style prompts and uses Suno to assemble and develop the music. The tool is part of the resulting sound, while the words and creative direction originate with him.

The division of labour matters more than the label “AI music.” Jean-Luc describes the writing and direction he contributes and where Suno fits into production. He has not specified how every vocal or instrumental part was made, so this First Look does not assign performances he has not confirmed.

Why listen to Les Chants du Silence?

This is a project evolving without abandoning its roots. The ocean and the ice supplied an early visual language; the newer songs bring that language closer to personal stories. What makes the work recognizable is not merely a genre or a software preset, but an artistic question pursued across several releases.

For other creators: a coherent music project doesn't always require an unchanging genre. It can grow from the questions a songwriter keeps asking—and the ways lyrics, images and sound answer one another.
