AI mentor character design guide cover about creating guides who move stories forward

How to Design a Mentor Character With AI Without Making Them a Talking Instruction Manual

A mentor should help a character move. They should not exist only to explain the story.

This article began as an older character concept. The more useful lesson today is how to build a guide or mentor who has a real role in the narrative.

Give the mentor four things

  • Point of view: what they believe.
  • Limit: what they cannot do for the protagonist.
  • History: why they care.
  • Conflict: where their advice may be incomplete or costly.

AI prompt

“Design a mentor who can clarify options but cannot solve the protagonist’s problem. Give the mentor one blind spot, one boundary and one personal stake in the outcome.”

This keeps advice inside the story instead of turning the character into a help menu.
