Abimelech: Gideon’s Son, Shechem’s King and the Warning Before Israel’s Monarchy

Before Israel formally asks Samuel for a king, Judges gives readers a brutal experiment in kingship.

Abimelech is Gideon’s son through a concubine in Shechem. After Gideon’s death, he appeals to his mother’s clan, secures money from the temple of Baal-berith and uses it to hire reckless followers. He then kills his brothers on one stone. Jotham alone escapes.

Is Abimelech one of the judges?

He belongs to the Book of Judges, but the narrative does not present him like Othniel, Deborah or Gideon at their points of deliverance. Abimelech is not raised to rescue Israel from a foreign oppressor. He seizes power over Israelites and is explicitly made king at Shechem.

Jotham’s fable is a warning about power

From Mount Gerizim, Jotham tells a parable in which productive trees refuse kingship while the bramble accepts. The bramble then threatens fire. The fable attacks the arrangement that placed Abimelech over Shechem and predicts mutual destruction between ruler and supporters.

The prediction unfolds

Abimelech’s alliance with Shechem collapses into betrayal and retaliatory slaughter. He destroys the city and attacks Thebez. There, a woman drops an upper millstone on his head. Mortally wounded, he orders his armor-bearer to kill him so people will not say a woman killed him.

Judges interprets this ending as divine repayment for Abimelech’s murder of his brothers and Shechem’s complicity.

Why this matters for the “no king” refrain

Later chapters repeatedly lament that Israel has no king. Abimelech prevents readers from assuming that kingship itself automatically cures chaos. Judges has already shown a king whose centralized power multiplies violence.

The road toward Saul and David therefore begins with two truths held together: Israel’s decentralized tribal order is collapsing, and a crown in the wrong hands can make collapse worse.
