The free plan is real—but narrower than the old email made it sound
Melody Genie’s August 12 email described free passes and “Creator Missions.” Its current public free-plan page now makes the boundaries much clearer.
At the time of this update, a free account gets two complete lyric generations per calendar month, with no credit card and no trial clock. The allowance resets on the first of the month.
What you can actually use for free
Lyric Writer
This is the main free creation tool. You can provide the concept, style, language, structure and rhyme direction, then generate an editable lyric draft.
Two complete lyrics per month
The current free allowance is six credits, enough for two Classic 1.0 lyric generations at three credits each.
Manual editing
You are not locked into the generated result. Editing your lyric manually remains available, which is important because the strongest use of the tool is as a draft-and-revision workflow.
Artist-inspired profiles
Free users can browse the platform’s 100+ artist-inspired profiles for creative reference and direction.
The tradeoff is that free generations use a smaller, faster model and the free experience includes sponsored reveal ads.
What the free plan does not currently include
DNA Mixer
Useful for translating multiple influence directions into a writing brief, but it currently sits outside the free Lyric Writer tier.

Passes vs credits: the simple version
You do not need to turn this into accounting. The current free plan provides six credits per month, and a Classic 1.0 lyric generation costs three credits. In practical terms, that is two complete free lyric runs.
Do not spend the free allowance trying to get lucky. Spend it trying to learn whether the workflow improves your writing.
What happened to “Creator Missions”?
The August 12 email used “Creator Missions” as the umbrella language for earning extra passes. The current public page describes the bonus mechanics more concretely.
Community bonus
Joining the Melody Genie community can add three credits—one extra pass—for that month.
First referral bonus
A first successful referral can add six credits—two passes—with the current page describing a bonus for both people.
Comeback pass
If you have used your allowance and return at least seven days after your last generation, the current system can add one comeback pass, capped at one per month.
These can change
Bonus programs are incentives, not permanent entitlements. Check the app before planning a workflow around a specific reward.
How I would spend the two free generations
Test one song you actually care about
Start with a clear one-sentence situation, not a vague genre request. Give Lyric Writer enough direction to prove whether it can help with hook logic, verse progression, rhyme or emotional clarity.
Run a controlled revision
Do not just hit generate again. Change the weakest part of your first brief—perspective, emotional turn, structure, rhyme direction or specificity—then compare the second result against the first.
What to judge after two generations
Specificity
Did the lyric move beyond generic emotion into concrete situations, images and decisions?
Hook value
Did you get a hook idea worth developing, even if you would rewrite the wording?
Verse progression
Does verse two actually advance the song rather than repeating verse one in different words?
Editability
Can you see a clear path from the generated draft to something that sounds like you?
When staying free makes sense
Stay on free access while you are still proving fit, writing only occasionally, or finding that Lyric Writer alone solves the problem you have. There is no reason to add another paid creator tool simply because more features exist.
When paying may make sense
Paying becomes more rational when you are already using Melody Genie repeatedly and the free boundary—not the quality of the workflow—is what stops you. It can also make sense when a specific paid tool such as DNA Mixer or Beat Matcher solves a bottleneck you can clearly name.
